Perks of Public Education: V = Vocational Courses

My perk for public education today begins with the letter V. V for me is for vocational courses. Many high schools now offer vocational courses for students. Elementary school and middle school students usually do not have the opportunity to participate in vocational courses. However for those students in high school, vocational courses are a big perk. Most high school schedules are set up so that students have the opportunity to take elective courses in addition to the required courses. A variety of vocational courses are usually offered. Vocational courses are not required but can they can help students make … Continue reading

Concerns of Public Education: Q = Questionable Conduct

Hello everyone! I am back with my concerns for public education series. Today, I am up to the letter Q. Q is for questionable conduct. It seems as though the education news section is now filled with acts of questionable conduct by teachers, administrators, and other school staff members. Several situations come to mind when I think of questionable conduct. The first case involves a teacher who took students on a field trip against the wishes of the administration. She also discussed very inappropriate relationship issues in her home living class. Another case involves a trial with a male teacher … Continue reading

Perks of Public Education: P = Parents

I have chosen the same topic for the letter P for both perks and concerns of public education. I feel that parents can be on both sides. First, I would like to discuss parents as being a perk. This year for me has been wonderful in the department of parents. I have had very few complaints or issues that have arose with parents. In fact, I have had one parent that has been awesome to work with in my classroom. Parents can be very supportive for teachers. Parents can help out with extra classroom duties and lighten the load with … Continue reading

Concerns of Public Education: L = Lice

Today’s concern of public education is also a health and living condition concern. Today’s letter l is the concern of lice. Each year most public schools have a bout of lice outbreak. For us it usually begins in the fall close to the time of the arrival of the county fair. It then continues through the beginning of winter. These times are more prominent for lice because of the massive amount of children together at the fair and the cold weather causing coats, hats, and scarves to be hung together in the room. Lice bugs are much more commonly found … Continue reading

Check back each week for educational activities to complete with your child this summer! Saturday, April 28 Concerns of Public Education: A = Attitude Teachers often do not get the recognition and credit that they deserve. In my community, teachers are not held in high regards such as doctors or lawyers. The attitude toward the importance of teachers needs to improve. Sunday, April 29 Perks of Public Education: B = Beginning Teaching is a wonderful … Continue reading

Concerns of Public Education: C= Consequence

So far I have listed attitude toward education and blame as concerns of public education. Today I would like to add consequences to that list. In today’s society teachers often have a difficult time with behavior. Behavior often worsens due to lack of significant consequences. Most states have placed a ban on corporal punishment. The states that still allow corporal punishment leave the choice to parents. Most parents are against it. I am not an advocate of corporal punishment. I would feel very uneasy about others spanking my children. However, I fear that the banning of corporal punishment is only … Continue reading

Concerns of Public Education: B = Blame

I love working with children in the public education system. However, like with all jobs, there are days that stress me out. With the letter B, I would like to discuss one term that usually upsets me to no end- blame. Some parents are quick to blame all of their child’s troubles on everyone except who should be receiving it. They refuse to see that any responsibility could fall within their own child or their parenting skills. I have one child that continuously played too rough on the playground. He enjoyed hitting and kicking and grabbing other children. After sending … Continue reading
