Teen Saves Bus Full of Kids

The story about the mom who went nuts on her daughter’s school bus driver failed to reassure me that letting my kid ride in a vehicle full of strangers was a stellar decision. Fortunately, I found solace in another bus blurb about a quick-thinking 16-year-old girl, who saved her fellow riders after the bus driver dropped dead while on duty. Rachel Guzy is being called a “super teen” for saving dozens of lives. According to reports, the New York high school student was riding on a bus along with other kids from a local day camp when the driver lost … Continue reading

Duty Doesn’t Have to Be Painful

For most of us, there are things in our home businesses we enjoy and that we think are fun, and then are those things we do because we have to. Some words like “duty” and “obligation” have become synonymous with pain and suffering. While once using a word like “duty” made a person feel proud and competent, now it tends to make us think of punishment and painful drudgery. It’s all in how we look at things… Think of what the word “duty” means to you? Do you think of unpleasant chores or details in your business? Do you think … Continue reading

Bus Duty

This week began my first week of bus duty for the year. Bus duty is required by most teachers in most schools. Bus duty is the duty when a teacher must look after students who ride the bus either in the mornings, the afternoons, or both. At my school, teachers only have bus duty in the mornings. The students stay in their assigned rooms until the buses leave in the afternoons. Bus duty at my school begins at 7:15. There are two teachers on duty each day. One teacher is assigned to the gym where students go if they are … Continue reading

Breastfeeding and Jury Duty

I have found myself in a most unpleasant situation. I will start by saying the simple fact of the matter is, I cannot serve. I have a gazillion and one reasons why I cannot but suffice it to say that as Murphey’s Law would have it, they called the one week I just can’t go. Every single babysitter known to man (or at least known to my adorable, but slightly difficult two year old twins) is busy and gone. Had they given me a summons the week earlier or the week later it would’ve been fine. But they didn’t and … Continue reading

Line of Duty — Terri Blackstock

In keeping with the commemoration of September 11th, I have chosen to review books that in some way hearken back to the men and women who have made this country what it is today. This novel by Terri Blackstock, while it is last in the series I will be reviewing, was written to honor the men and women who served us during 9/11 and I think it’s very appropriate to review this book today. Taken from the acknowledgement: “As many of you know, I fully intended to end this series with Book 4, “Trial by Fire.” But on September 11, 2001, … Continue reading

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints View of Family

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has its own view of what a family is. This is described in a proclamation to the world that was issued by the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles in 1995. Here is what it said: We, THE FIRST PRESIDENCY of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator’s plan for the eternal destiny of His children. IN THE PREMORTAL REALM, spirit … Continue reading

Simple Sanity Savers

Believe it or not, summer vacation just started for students attending Chicago public schools.  Last fall’s highly publicized teacher strike, which affected nearly 400,000 students, forced kids to stay in school through the end of June. Success Literature Is Good Inspiration

When you own and operate your own home – based business, you will quickly discover that you are in charge of many things. If your home – based business is a one person operation, than you are actually in charge of everything. This may be quite a departure from whatever your responsibilities were at the jobs that you had before you made the switch to working for yourself and working from home. Depending upon what jobs you had, you may have occasionally been involved in workplace activities that were designed to inspire or motivate you and your coworkers to do … Continue reading
