Monday, May 12 Questions about Reading Fluency Many teachers and parents feel that their child and students knowing how to read is satisfactory. Does Education Slack at the End of the Year?

Most schools are beginning to now wrap up their school year. Nearing the end of the school year, many activities are planned. Schools plan fun days, field days, graduations, and more. The academic stress is basically over and students and teachers alike are ready to hit the fun in the sun. Children are involved less and less in instructional time and more and more in fun or non-typical school activities. Teachers are beginning to lessen their classroom discipline strategies and allow a little more informal interaction among the students. Some parents are not pleased with these activities. In fact some … Continue reading

But It’s My Birthday!

Happy birthday to me! Happy birthday to me! Happy birthday dear me! Happy birthday to me! Yep, you guessed it: It’s my birthday. Another year gone, another year older. Birthdays used to be so exciting. I remember looking at the calendar in anticipation when I was younger, counting down the days until I got to eat cake and open presents. It was nearly impossible to go to sleep the night before. I’d wake up early, go into my parents’ bedroom, and the entire family would gather around for gift opening. I would be freed of my morning duty of making … Continue reading

Getting Teens to Dress Conservatively for School

I realize that this subject is interpretable and perhaps a bit controversial, but the way teens dress for school really does affect their education. Take for instance, the Cobb County GA Teen who liked to wear women’s clothes to school and the disruption that three days in skinny jeans caused. While most teens don’t go nearly this far to express their personal style, they do love to push boundaries, and they often push them too far. Just five years ago, low rise jeans for girls were pushed to the extreme. It was common for girls to wear these jeans to … Continue reading

Parents as Fashion Police

From the pool… back to school. Summer is rapidly coming to an end (sigh) and soon parents will be less worried about whether their daughter’s swimsuits are too tight and more concerned about whether their son’s pants are too baggy. Right now many of us are smack in the middle of that dreaded annual ritual—back to school shopping. Besides gathering the right shopping lists for each child and calculating how our household budgets will accommodate new pens, pencils, backpacks, socks, shoes, pants, tops and haircuts most parents are faced with the additional role of acting as fashion police. Who among … Continue reading

Tell Him He’s Wonderful

Yesterday I watched my husband telling the Bible story and how the young children focused on what he told them. He has a real gift in relating to children. I told him that and how I enjoy teaching with him. ‘I love Scripture’ one of the girls at school said yesterday. ‘So do I,’ I replied. ‘Because I love that we can come and tell you about Jesus.’ I especially love the way my husband’s been passionate for over thirty years about teaching children of Jesus I love the way he knows when I need to write and leaves me … Continue reading

Choosing Quality TV Programs

The debate over how much TV is too much TV is one of those issues that will probably continue to be debated for many years. While I try to limit the amount of TV Tyler watches, I don’t feel I need to ban the “idiot box” all together. Since I limit his TV time, Tyler knows what to expect and does not argue the point. I don’t control how much TV he watches when he’s with his father. As I said, I don’t think we should ban TV altogether. And yes, some days I allow him to watch more TV … Continue reading

8 Things Dad Can do to Support his Homeschooling Wife

Let’s face it: homeschooling is a full time job! So is cleaning the house and taking care of the kids. My husband, in my eyes could win a “Father of the Year Award.” He takes on all manner of extra duties so that we can home school our kids. Although I am home with the kids and I am primarily the one who does the teaching, my husband picks up the slack so that home schooling can work in our busy household of 5 kids–all under the age of 7, mind you. Here’s a list of the 10 things he … Continue reading
