Schools In Illinois Can Stock Epi-Pens

Public schools in Illinois will be legally allowed to stock EpiPens in the Nurses’ Offices in the upcoming school year. This means that an EpiPen can be used on students who are having severe and lethal allergic reactions immediately. This will save lives of children whose first allergic reaction to something is an extremely serious one. An EpiPen is a device that can be used to auto-inject a specific amount of epinephrine into a person who is having a severe allergic reaction to something, and who is experiencing anaphylaxis. Left untreated, a person can quickly die from anaphylaxis. The epinephrine … Continue reading

Another Reason to Fear the School Lunch

In general, whenever someone uses the phrase “school lunch”, it causes people to shudder. These meals often taste horrible, and are less than nutritious. It has been revealed that the infamous pink slime is actually being added to the ground beef served at schools. No one knows which schools have it. Parents who choose to homeschool have many valid reasons for doing so. Maybe you want your kids to be raised in a culture that matches your faith. You can probably provide a better learning environment for your children that what is offered at many public schools. Homeschooling means that … Continue reading

The New Trend in Special Education

Like a pendulum on a grandfather clock, ideas about the best way to educate children who have special needs seem to swing back and forth. Do you know what to expect in the new school year? What is better for children who have special needs? Is it best to group these students into classrooms with other students who also have special needs, or is it better to place these kids into “mainstream” classrooms? Historically speaking, the trends in Special Education shift between these two ideas, over and over again. Right now, many schools across the country are mostly focused on … Continue reading

Florida School Discusses Use of Face Down Restraints

Members of the school board at Palm Beach County School in Florida have discussed the use of a controversial type of restraint. The face-down restraint would be used as a last resort on special needs students who are deemed to be a danger to themselves or others. However, this means that there is potential that this hold will be used. Would you give permission for your child to be restrained in this way? Certain kinds of restraints have been used in special needs classrooms all across the country. When I worked as a teacher’s aide in a special needs classroom, … Continue reading

Special Needs Proms Becoming More Popular

We are nearing the end of the school year. This means that most high schoolers are anticipating an event that is considered, by many, as a touchstone in a young person’s life. Those who don’t participate in this event are told that they will forever regret it. The event I am talking about, of course, is Prom. Having a special need doesn’t prevent a high schooler from wanting to attend Prom. Many High Schools, across the country, are recognizing this. Prom is a very big deal for most high school students. It requires a lot of important decisions to be … Continue reading

New Pet Products for 2011

Before Christmas pet website Zootoo published a list of new holiday pet products. None of the items are explicitly Christmas-themed, however, so I thought I’d share them now; maybe you might even be able to find some of these at post-holiday discount prices. The Walking My Dog Kid-Sized Leash is the latest product meant to make those dog walks easier. My little 20-pound shepherd/beagle mix gives the leash such a hefty pull that I use a Gentle Leader with her on walks, so I can imagine how difficult it might be for children to hold a lead for many dogs. … Continue reading

More Recess, Mom

Ask my first grader what her favorite part of the school day is and in less than a nanosecond she will respond: “RECESS!” I don’t need to be a recess mom to know how much my kid enjoys running, jumping, cartwheeling, and horsing around with friends on the school playground. I just feel bad that we live in a part of the country where outdoor play in temperate conditions is severely limited. My daughter’s school mandates that students play outside for at least 30-45 minutes per day (two to three, 15-minute recesses) unless it is pouring, or if the temperature … Continue reading
