Southern Belle Schooling in Tennessee

Many years ago children were thought to need to learn more than academics at school. Boys were taught survival skills and girls were taught to be ladies. While more than academics are taught at schools now, much of the etiquette has been lost. Teachers are now teaching street survival skills about sex, drugs, and more. However, Columbia, Tennessee is one of the few places where a girl can still learn to be a proper lady. For one week during the summer, girls ages 14 through 18 can attend a Southern Belle school for girls. The school takes the girls back … Continue reading

The Comment of a Child

My last few articles have focused on the labeling of students and divisions of students by academic terms. I have listed both the pros and cons of informing students of their academic skill levels. In my class I do divide students by academic reading levels. I have two different groups in my class. The two groups work with me at different times. They are reading in two different books. I have never once called the two groups a high group or a low group. However, I know that some of the wiser students have quickly figured it out. I am … Continue reading

Cons of Students Knowing Skill Levels

Previously, I discussed how it was brought to my attention that some schools are now helping students to understand their skill levels. The students are being given a skill number that helps them know where they stand academically. In my last article I discussed the pros of students knowing their skill levels. In this article I will address some cons of students knowing and understanding how they compare academically. Lack of Effort When an intelligent student is given a very high skill number and realizes that his or her number is much higher than some other students, the child may … Continue reading

Student Skill Levels

Recently I received a private message from Valorie. Valorie writes in the homeschool section but is very much in touch with education in general. In her message she stated that the school systems in her area were now informing students of their skill levels. She questioned if my area did the same. We do not inform students of what level that they are working on. The only level that is given to students is their reading level as determined by a STAR test on the computer. This level is an approximate grade level range in which books would best suit … Continue reading

The Power of One Child

In many articles, I have discussed how children are all individuals. We now have a very popular term that is used to explain how teachers must teach to all of the students as individuals and not as a class. That term is “differentiated instruction”. When accepting this term you are understanding that students learn differently and must be taught with different strategies. Children react differently and respond differently. Children may have different behaviors among different peer personalities. In any given classroom, a teacher is sure to experience several different personality and behavior types. Some children will be outgoing while others … Continue reading

How Students can Affect One Another

Children are each complete individuals. They think, learn, and act differently. They respond to the world differently. They react based on their personalities and experiences. Children all have different thoughts, ideas, and feelings. It is amazing how different environments and different stimulus can make children act differently. A very outgoing talkative child may become quiet and shy when presented with a new or unfamiliar situation. A very quiet and calm child may become loud and excited when placed in a high energy setting. Children also respond differently among other children. Some children bring out the best in each other while … Continue reading

Students Paid to Attend Tutoring

It seems as if schools and teachers will do almost anything now to get students in school and learning. Each and every day educators are working on ways to get children actively involved in their academics. However, the challenge is getting greater and greater. It is harder and harder to compete with the world’s action and troubles. Lack of discipline, lack of parental involvement, and drugs all play a part in the competition that teachers face. Georgia has created a plan in which students cannot afford not to attend school. Two schools, one a high school and one a middle … Continue reading

How Time is Spent at School

There was a recent article in the U.S. News & World Report recently that caught my eye. The idea behind the article was that American students waste much time at school with nonacademic things. They compared the number of hours that students in American spend learning to the number that students in other countries spend. They found that Americans are in the books less. To be honest, the article did not convince me or intrigue me that much. However, it did start a line of thinking for me. I began thinking about my day at school and how much time … Continue reading

School Boys Test Movie Facts

Teaching is never a boring job. Each day leads to something new. Some of the things are fun and exciting and others are less than thrilling. However, each day is an adventure of its own. One can never be shocked at what a student might do or say next. I can say that the same must go for the job of being a school nurse. I can only imagine half of what a school nurse hears and sees throughout her day. A couple of fourth grade boys in Indiana helped add a little bit of excitement to both their teacher’s … Continue reading
