Hellboy Made Zachary’s Wish Come True

It is pretty amazing what the Make-A-Wish Foundation can do! Six year old Zachary’s wish was to meet Hellboy, and also to become Hellboy himself. It takes some creativity to fulfill a wish that involves a comic book character, but, they managed to make it come true. I love hearing happy stories like this one! Zachary is six years old. He has been undergoing treatment for leukemia. According to the Mayo Clinic, leukemia “is cancer of the body’s blood-forming tissues, including the bone marrow and the lymphatic system. Many types of leukemia exist. Some forms of leukemia are more common … Continue reading

Blending Made Easy

Ok, let’s face it, blending two families is never easy. There’s a reason second marriages fail more often than firsts. Adjusting to the new dynamics is hard on everyone, children and parents alike. There are so many different facets that have to be worked out. When should you discipline your partner’s children? What will they call you? What is expected of them? What is expected of you? It is important to discuss all of these issues with your partner and also as a family to alleviate some of the confusion that naturally comes with combining what once was two separate … Continue reading

Buying Used to Save May be Threatened

I love to buy things used. Recently I made a list of books on different areas of child rearing that I wanted, but I didn’t want to pay full price for them. I went to Half Price Books armed with my list and walked away happy. I found most of the books I wanted and some not on my list. I didn’t pay a lot and was very pleased with my transaction. I went home and collected books that I no longer wanted so I could take them with me next time to trade-in for credit toward my purchases. I … Continue reading

School Buses: Another Idle Threat

I have been blogging about vehicle idling and the damage it can do to your wallet and the environment. The rule of thumb is to turn your engine off if you plan on sitting idle for more than 30 seconds. No, it won’t hurt the engine and no, idling won’t help your car warm up. But, even if everyone turned their vehicles off, there is still another idling threat – school buses. It is estimated that each day, 24 million kids in the U.S. ride school buses. That means there are about 600,000 school buses on the road each day. … Continue reading

Santa Threat Worked Like a Charm

I’d brag more if I didn’t feel so darn guilty about it all. Okay, the guilt is not that overwhelming, but it’s enough to make my confession list. So, Santa made it to our home in the wee hours of Christmas morning. He came, he unloaded, his reindeer left carrot crumbs on the kitchen floor, and now he’s gone for another three-hundred-sixty-something days. Now how am I going to keep my kindergartener in line? For six solid weeks I relied on the big guy’s impending visit to encourage my young daughter to be on her best behavior. “Santa’s watching,” I’d … Continue reading

Parental Threat: Intention Good, Results Not So Much

We’ve all been there in one way or another. As kids we were on the receiving end of it, and as parents with unruly children, who are prone to throw punches and barbs at each other in the backseat of a moving vehicle, many of us have doled out the empty threat ourselves: “If you kids don’t stop fighting, I’m going to stop this car right now and you can walk home!” Only, for an affluent New York mother the threat was far from empty. According to reports, Madlyn Primoff, who just happens to be a partner in a Manhattan … Continue reading

The Santa Threat

It happened in a blink of an eye. I just couldn’t help myself. I don’t know what came over me. I’ve become one of those parents… a full-fledged adult who uses Santa Claus as a behavior modifier. I’ve tried to console myself by thinking of the millions of other parents who fall into the same trap this time of year. Still, I feel bad that in a moment of weakness I pulled out the Santa card and used it on my 4-year-old. The day started out so innocently. I had a list of errands to complete, including mailing out our … Continue reading

California Fires Threaten Celebrity Homes

Once again, California wildfires are threatening homes. A fast growing fire started in Montecito, California, which is in the hills above Santa Barbara. Today, Oprah talked about the wildfires, which threaten her own neighborhood. Other celebrities who have homes in Montecito are Carol Burnett, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Costner, Ellen DeGeneres, Michael Douglas, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Rob Lowe, Christopher Lloyd, and Steve Martin. Oprah said “All our prayers are with all the folks and neighbors in Santa Barbara. Hope you’re well today. And those of you who lost your homes, our hearts go out to you.” An Oprah rep said that currently, … Continue reading

When a Threat is Made…

School violence and shootings are becoming more and more common. In fact they are so common that teachers can no longer assume that the gun actions of imaginative boys is innocent. Words of shooting and death cannot be ignored or taken lightly. While I am thankful that my county has been saved thus far from the terror and nightmare of school shootings, I am aware of threats and threatening notes. These threats have been made to both students and to teachers. While the parents of all involved students and the students’ teachers are made aware of the situation, not everyone … Continue reading

Baby Blog Week in Review: August 7 to August 11

We have had a busy week in the baby blog! If you haven’t had time to catch up on all your reading, here it is all in one place. Grab a cup of coffee and have a seat! August 7 Why Banning Formula Isn’t Awful This week the New York City Department of Health banned free formula in New York City public hospitals in an effort to promote breastfeeding. The internet has been abuzz about the ban both for and against it. Although I actively promote breastfeeding when possible, I actually think that banning formula is good economic sense. Read … Continue reading
