Things to Know About Preschoolers and YouTube Videos

Your preschooler may have developed an interest in YouTube videos. There are some videos out there that were created for young children to view. The majority of YouTube, however, is not intended for young children. Here are some things that parents need to know about preschoolers and YouTube videos. Limit Screen Time The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that television and other entertainment media should be avoided for infants and children under age 2. They also recommend that children and teens should engage with entertainment media for no more than two hours per day – and that the media … Continue reading

Helping Your Kids Keep Their Books Under Control

Children’s books are the one thing that I have a hard time saying no to when the kids ask. While we make liberal use of our library, children’s books still seem to find their way into our home, through yard sales, library sales, school book sales and hand me downs. With three kids at different reading levels, there isn’t a lot of overlap, so each child needs his or her own set of books that they can read and re-read. Let us just say that I have a lot of experience organizing children’s books and keeping the books under control. … Continue reading

Preschool Primer Part 3 – Making The Choice

Yesterday, I described some of the types of preschool curricula that parents may encounter when they are going through the process of choosing a preschool for their toddler. Curriculum is important because it gives you an idea of what your child will be doing all day and whether there is a comfortable balance between free, creative play and structured activity. Of course, choosing a preschool is about more than just the curriculum. Today I will discuss the other factors that are a part of the preschool choosing process. Basic items like cost, location, transportation, and pick up/drop off times as … Continue reading

Another Reason to Fear the School Lunch

In general, whenever someone uses the phrase “school lunch”, it causes people to shudder. These meals often taste horrible, and are less than nutritious. It has been revealed that the infamous pink slime is actually being added to the ground beef served at schools. No one knows which schools have it. Parents who choose to homeschool have many valid reasons for doing so. Maybe you want your kids to be raised in a culture that matches your faith. You can probably provide a better learning environment for your children that what is offered at many public schools. Homeschooling means that … Continue reading

Preserving Your Sanity on the Road

And they’re off! Our neighbors have officially departed on their annual summer pilgrimage to Canada to visit their family members and friends. They left about four hours ago in a Chevy Blazer filled to the gills with three kids, two adults, one Beagle and a ton of luggage, plus two well-stocked coolers and what looked like the kitchen sink. Better them than me. I’ve driven cross-country before, but never with three young kids in the backseat. Not me; I prefer to fly 5,000 miles with my infant turned chatty toddler, thank you very much. I don’t think anything properly prepares … Continue reading

Gearing Up for Your First Home Schooling Year

So, you decided to make the big leap and home school your children? As significant as this decision was, you will be faced with many more as you embark on this journey. Here are some basic advice to guide you through the first questions and decisions you will face. Of course, things are not always this simple, but it’s best to keep our perspective and not get too overwhelmed. Home schooling is a learning experience for the parent as much as the child. What curriculum should I use? This is the question mainly asked by new home schooling parents. What … Continue reading

Fabulous Smoothies Your Preschooler Will Drink

I have the most stubborn breakfast-eater on the face of the planet. Oh, I am sure that there are some children who might almost measure up, but my daughter will happily go without food until noon if I let her. I try not to let her. In fact, I have been known to beg, cajole, plead, threaten, and use all sorts of untoward parenting behaviors just to get her to eat a few bites. I believe that she is truly not all that hungry in the morning, but unfortunately she has blood sugar crashes if she doesn’t eat until later … Continue reading

Reasons to Love Having an Only Child: The Preschool Years

When I was growing up, only children were perceived as very negative little human beings. My mother told me that only children were spoiled and lonely. They didn’t know how to socialize. I grew up pitying only children and vowed to have at least four children of my own. I had two siblings and loved being the big sister. Then came my daughter, and then came a host of medical challenges that made it difficult for me to have more children. I found myself in an interesting position: I needed to confront my stereotypes about only children, because I was … Continue reading

Knitting With Your Preschooler

For more than a month now, I’ve been going to a knitting group on Wednesday afternoons. Our group just finished this week, and I suspect I’m going to go through withdrawal. I’ve scheduled a few knitting sessions with a friend and her daughter so that I can bridge the gap. It might be tough, but we can do it. In case you think that I’m a knitting expert, I am pleased to say that in the past few weeks I have finally mastered the art of purling. Hooray for me! My daughter has been knitting too, kind of. We were … Continue reading

A Preschooler’s Sense of Style

My daughter can be very amusing, as all daughters and sons can be sometimes. She’s especially funny when she tries out new words. Her current interest in words appears to be fashion. Overheard the other day, while my daughter played with the pet rats, “Sorrel, you are looking very attractive today. Parsley, you haven’t been grooming much, have you?” Lately, I’ve been told that I look ridiculous and that I look stylish. We’re trying out the words and the fashion sense around here, I see. Preschoolers definitely have a distinctive sense of style. I blame my daughter’s fashion sense on … Continue reading
