Five things homeschoolers can do in their spare time

According to US schools chief Arne Duncan, school kids need more classroom time. Fortunately for homeschoolers, learning one-on-one supplies much more quality time and so long hours aren’t really necessary. In fact, most homeschoolers are done with educational instruction time by lunchtime. This leaves a lot of spare time to play, and learn, explore. With that said, here are 10 things homeschoolers can do in their spare time. 1. Read: My kids have spent many hours under table, on sofas, in beds, and on a blanket on the lawn reading books. This is a very healthy activity for students that … Continue reading

Kids Virtual Field Trips

Whether you home school, summer school, preschool or just like to have educational fun with your kids, you should be very interested in this blog post. Virtual field trips for kids (and in some cases by kids) are a great way to introduce children to places that are not feasible to physically visit. You can also encourage kids to chronicle their own real-life field trips and share them with others, whether through their own website, a YouTube video or through a website such as MeetMeAtTheCorner.org. Let’s start with MeetMeAtTheCorner.org. It is focused on the New York City area, but it … Continue reading

Are Field Trips Educational: They Can Be!

Many administrators and directors question if field trips can be educational. My quick reply is “yes!!!” Many districts are limited to taking field trips. I feel that this is a shame. I do not support taking a trip each week to play at the park or go to the swimming pool. However, I do not feel that many teachers would even consider things such as these. But I do feel that field trips are important school experiences. Many administrators are concerned about the class time missed due to the students going on a field trip. Children learn best from experiences. … Continue reading

Why Some Parents are Unschooling Their Kids

Unschooling is a form of homeschooling that involves less structure and more child-centered learning. Parents who are unhappy with the way that learning is presented at schools have been turning to the unschooling movement as their solution for what their child’s education should be like. Unschooling has some similarities with homeschooling. In both cases, a child stays home and receives his or her education there (instead of in a classroom at a school). Each educational style allows parents to be very involved in what their child is taught. Parents can set the speed that information is presented in order to … Continue reading

Disney Youth Programs

Your kids could learn physics from a roller coaster Three times now I’ve written about special events offered by Disney World under the Disney Youth Programs division: Grad Nite/Senior Class Trip, STEP Classic, and Festival Disney. So what is Disney Youth Programs itself? Its official website doesn’t have an “about” section, but perhaps that’s because the name of the department is rather self-explanatory. Disney Youth Programs is the banner under which the Disney Parks offer a multitude of deals, discounts, and opportunities for youth groups and organizations. Youth Programs falls under four main categories: Performing Arts, Education, Celebrations, and Field … Continue reading

Pritikin Longevity Center and Spa

Before we begin, let me start off by saying that I am not affiliated with Pritikin nor is this a review nor was I compensated for writing this post. This information was relayed to me and I thought it may be of interest to some readers. I have never been to the Pritikin longevity center nor have I followed the Pritikin diet. Given this information I looked into it with an open mind and thought it sounded like a wonderful place to go on vacation. If only, this were a review where I could tell you of the wonderful time … Continue reading

Guerilla Learning

Are you a guerilla? No, I don’t mean one of those large, ape-type creatures, although you might feel like one some of the time. I mean someone who doesn’t quite believe in the structure of institutional learning that school provides. Perhaps your children go to school, or maybe you’re homelearners. Whatever your children’s educational situation, Grace Llewellyn and Amy Silver’s classic book Guerilla Learning: Giving Your Child a Real Education With or Without School can help guide you. Learning should be part of a child’s entire life, and it is part of a child’s entire life, whether we remember this … Continue reading

Cutting to the Chase

School is about to begin again for those following a traditional school year. It’s time to go through all your teacher’s manuals and plan out your year. As you begin to go through your teacher’s manuals, textbooks, literature books, and workbooks do you ever get overwhelmed with how much curriculum you purchased? During the high of school shopping and the desire to educate your children with only the best did you buy too many workbooks or textbooks to cover in a year? One year I could not decide between three grammar workbooks. To solve my dilemma I did what any … Continue reading

Starting A Collection For Fun and Learning

When home schooling kids there are so many things you can do that incorporate fun and learning. Then again, not having a structured curriculum often leaves you coming up blank with something new to do. This is where starting a collection comes in handy. I always tried to get as much education out of even the smallest activity. Think about it, just baking a cake can incorporate math, nutrition, history, time management, safety, and even spelling. The educational value and fun factor involved with starting and maintaining a collection is unlimited. Each of my three home schooled girls started a … Continue reading
