Fun and Festive New Year’s Layouts

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but it can also translate into a room full of belly laughs if displayed just right. If you are looking to create a unique New Year’s layout for your holiday scrapbook, focus on the funny. For example, if your family members and friends tend to get a bit wild and wacky ringing in the New Year, be sure you capture the craziness with your camera. Then, continue snapping shots the morning after. By recording the recovery process in a series of photos, you will have ample material to craft an amusing scrapbook … Continue reading

Daycare Day 1: Morning

The morning came particularly quickly on my son’s first day of daycare. Despite my wife’s best efforts to have everything neatly organized in bags near the door the morning still felt rushed, uncomfortable, and different. I had a little talk with my son. As a father I felt it was my duty to tell him that today was going to be different. I told him that we weren’t abandoning him and that his mom was going to check in on him at lunchtime and pick him up early. I told him that he would be with other babies and some … Continue reading

Simple Ways to Say “Thanks” With Your Preschooler This Thanksgiving

I work with small children. One of the few ideals that I brought into my life as a parent was that I wanted to have a child who would be polite. Of course, like all of my parenting ideals, that one is regularly crushed when my child loudly announces at the playground, “I want that swing! I don’t want you to be on that swing! Get off the swing!” Ah, four-year-olds. However, through interminable repetition, I do seem to have a child who says please and thank you. Please and thank you are very important in our house. So when … Continue reading

Preparing a Young Child for the Hospital

Whether it is tubes in the ear for frequent ear infections or something more serious, having a young child stay in the hospital, especially when it involves surgery, can be a nerve-filled experience for both you and your child. Parents Magazine recently published an article all about preparing children when they have to go to the hospital. There is some good advice here, especially as it relates to babies and the youngest children. I’ve adapted some of the advice given as a result of my own experiences with children and hospitals. Inform yourself I always became less anxious whenever I … Continue reading

Boxing superstar Mike Tyson’s 4-year-old daughter Exodus is fighting for her life in a Phoenix hospital, and doctors say things don’t look good. According to FOX News, the little girl is on life support after getting her head caught in a cable attached to a treadmill. Reports say Tyson’s 7-year-old son found Exodus early this morning in the family’s rec room. The boy called for his mom, who then called 911 while trying to revive the young girl. Phoenix police told FOX News, “Somehow she was playing on this treadmill, and there’s a cord that hangs under the console – … Continue reading

Recipes for Your Christmas Breakfast Buffet

If you are a hosting a house full of family members for Christmas, then you are likely spending this week putting the final touches on your holiday menu. While most of us fret over what to serve for Christmas dinner, there are some of us (me) who dwell on what to serve the morning after Santa visits. Cold cereal and dry toast won’t cut it on Christmas morning, but you don’t want to chain yourself to the stove either. After all, who wants to be slaving away in the kitchen while the rest of the family is enjoying their new … Continue reading

Ideas on How to Get in More Time with Your Spouse

Earlier I addressed how most Americans find that their time is more valuable to them than their money. Because we value our time so greatly, we can sometimes find it hard to give it to others. When we do give others our time, we are giving them a very special gift. There is no piece of jewelry or item that can take the place of the memories that you create when you spend time with your loved ones. In our very busy world, we remain rushed and on a schedule. It can be difficult to make ourselves take time to … Continue reading

Celebrating Year 12: You and Me, So Happy Wii Be

Yesterday Wayne and I celebrated our 12th wedding anniversary. Hard to believe that twelve years ago, in a little church in Denver, we exchanged I Dos. In some respects it feels like just yesterday, in others it seems so much longer than that. (But in a good way.) Like many little girls, I had always dreamed of being married. I had never dreamed of a church wedding, though. I had never really dreamt about the ceremony at all, save for wearing a beautiful gown and standing at an altar with my groom looking dreamily into each other’s eyes. (Goes back … Continue reading

Turn Your Gift Faux Pas into a Gift Well Received!

Are you getting your child’s teacher a Christmas gift this year? If so you must read this blog! While some parents and kids seem to have the gift giving know how, teachers across America have desks full of useless mugs, tacky ornaments and other items that are better suited for a white elephant party. Gift Faux Pas #1: Little somethings from Victoria’s Secret I wasn’t going to share this story and then as I was reading, I saw three other stories of teachers who got similarly inappropriate items. Mine was a see through nightie with tassles. In case you’re thinking … Continue reading

Are You a Little Rushed in the Morning?

These parents must have been. At least I am going to assume that’s what happened. They were busily trying to get everyone fed, dressed and out the door and at the last minute remembered that they had to write a note on behalf of their child. These are actual excuse notes written to teachers by parents! Realizing that her son has P.E. today and needed to be excused, one mother wrote the following: My son is under a doctor’s care and has to miss P.E. today. Please execute him! Along the same lines: Please excuse Lisa for being absent. She … Continue reading
