Baby Blog Month in Review: August 2008

Isn’t it crazy the way babies grow so quickly? It seems that you just get used to one stage and boom they are already into another. Tonight, were busy getting the household all set for my eldest child’s first day of second grade. My two younger ones are excited and want to start school, too. It will be a busy month. Don’t worry about the missing last week of blogs. I’ve gotten quite a few questions about where I have been. The Baby Blog tends to go on hiatus the last week of the month. That may change in the … Continue reading

Janet, yesterday we talked about your first fiction book, “Don’t You Marry the Mormon Boys,” which has received numerous awards. Now let’s talk about life as a writer. What is your writing schedule like? Not as disciplined as it should be. I’ll be “stuck” somewhere and rather than tackling the problem or working on another segment until I can figure out a solution, I’ll just procrastinate. I’m amazed … Continue reading

The Marriage Blog Week in Review – November 4 –10

It’s been a busy and exciting week here in the Marriage blog. There was a national election on Tuesday that saw 7 states accept constitutional amendments to ban gay marriage, while one state – Arizona said no to that ban. If you don’t read my fitness blog, you may not have known that I also quit smoking this week and today marks Day 4 heading into Day 5 and I’ll be writing about how great my spouse has been in supporting this effort next week. In the meanwhile, if you missed any of our key stories this week, here is … Continue reading

Ways to Cope with the “Homework Gap”

The majority of students will end the school day with a batch of homework that they must complete. Today, many schools require students to make use of the internet in order to complete their work. This can be a big problem for students who fall into the “homework gap”. What’s the “homework gap”? It is the space between the students whose families have access to the internet at home – and the students whose families do not have internet access at home. Those who cannot access the internet at home are at a disadvantage. The Council of Economic Advisers released … Continue reading

Reading is an important skill. Parents who want to raise an avid reader need to take the time to read lots of stories to their children. It is also a good idea to let your child see you reading. Animal Abuse on the Set of ‘The Hobbit?’

As I mentioned, we saw Lincoln this past weekend. One of the previews was for The Hobbit, the much anticipated Peter Jackson film which opens in a few weeks. But, the film isn’t without controversy. Several animal wranglers used on the film say that up to 27 animals died on the New Zealand ranch where they were being housed and trained due to poor living conditions. The wranglers also claim that many animals were hurt and had to be euthanized, including a horse named Rainbow that broke its back. Yet another horse reportedly died after falling over a bluff and … Continue reading

Sunday Mornings

Sunday mornings are my favorite time. Ever since getting divorced is seems like Sunday morning is really the only time Hailey and I can slow down and just enjoy each other’s company. When she was younger there was always so much to do, the weeks were packed and Saturday was super busy with all the household stuff that was neglected all week, but Sunday was our day. Sunday has always been the day we get to slow down, we have a huge breakfast and spend most of the day in our pajamas. We don’t always “do” things together, although sometimes … Continue reading

Happy Hobbit Day!

Fans of Tolkien celebrate September 22 as the birthday of two of his most famous characters. By “Shire Reckoning”, both Bilbo Baggins and Frodo Baggins would be celebrating their birthdays today. Hobbit Day has been celebrated for around thirty years now. Here is a brief look into the Baggins family tree. J.R.R. Tolkien is the author who wrote “The Hobbit”, and “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. If you haven’t read at least one of those books yourself, then you probably saw the movies. I can remember watching the animated version of “The Hobbit” when I was a kid. Fans … Continue reading

Embrace the Baggy

“No more pencils, no more books, no more teachers’ dirty looks.” School’s out for the summer in my neck of the woods, and for my recently graduated first grader and the rest of her classmates, it means freedom from their starchy red, white and blue uniforms. “I’m wearing shorts and slippers all summer!” my daughter declared last night. Better than nothing at all. I understand my child’s desire to frolic in non-restrictive clothing, but you still won’t catch her strolling to the park in shorts that expose her underwear. I’m not about the baggy. In fact, I’ve been rather outspoken … Continue reading
