When the Gym Teacher Goes Nuts

I think it was Woody Allen, who once wrote: “Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach. And those who can’t teach — teach gym!” You might think that there is some truth to that statement after you learn what a gym teacher in New York did to land himself in hot water. According to police, a substitute gym teacher lost it with an 11-year-old student during an innocent game of dodgeball last week. Police say 58-year-old Daniel Sanabria of New Rochelle, got into a fight with the sixth grader at the end of a gym class dodgeball game. Sanabria … Continue reading

Why I Was Embarrassed to Admit I’m a Stay-at-Home Wife

When I finally made the confession that I’m a stay-at-home wife, I alluded to the fact that I felt guilty and suggested that I was embarrassed of my status. It’s true. Guilty as charged. But why? The Way I Was Raised The reason for that is because of my mom. In “Another Reason I’m Married Without Children”, I explained how my mom didn’t like kids and looked down on motherhood. But it went beyond that. I don’t know if she was a feminist, but she had feministic tendencies for sure. It was drilled into my head from an early age … Continue reading

Callings: Handling More Than One

If you live in a small branch, or ward you may be asked to take on more than one calling. It can be difficult to juggle the many commitments, and still make your family the first priority. It is important to remember that your family comes first, and to find a good balance with all of your callings as you strive to be active in the church. First you need to decide whether or not you can handle the two callings or if they conflict with each other. For example you may be able to be achievement days leader and … Continue reading

Why So Many Parents Homeschool “Problem” Children

A teacher of a five year old boy is recorded calling the child “pathetic”, “selfish”, and “ignorant” and discouraging other kids from being his friend. The teachers union saying that the teacher’s rights have been violated. A Kindergarten teacher stands one child in front of the classroom and one by one has them tell him what they don’t like about him and have them vote on whether or not he deserves to be in the classroom. The teacher is unapologetic. Both of these incidents hit the national news in the past month. What is worse than these incidents is the … Continue reading

Moments that Make Homeschooling Worth It

We homeschoolers love to point out the academic progress of our kids, and how high they score on academic tests. Since we have an easy time pinpointing their areas of genius, we love to revel in them finding their callings at an early age. These accomplishments definitely make homeschooling worth the struggle… and there is struggle involved. It is the little moments, however that make all the work of homeschooling well worth it. I think it was a moment with my son’s Sunday school teacher that helped me know for a fact that I was on the right track. We … Continue reading

More Advice on How to Call a Teacher at Home

In a previous article, I discussed the incident where a student called the school director’s home and his wife returned the call. I then discussed how frustrating it can be to have work related calls at home. While most teachers and public officials should expect to receive a few calls at home (especially if their number is listed in the telephone book), too many calls can be overwhelming and stressful. My article also began giving parents some tips on how to more positively call teachers or school faculty members. My first tip was to check and make sure that the … Continue reading

Calling a Teacher at Home

In an article written earlier, I recapped a news story about a student who called the school director’s house to question why school did not close for snow. The less than happy wife of the director returned the call and angrily commented that the boy should not have called their house. My husband and I are both in the education field. We do receive calls from parents at our house. Because we are both in elementary education, we rarely receive calls from students. I can understand the wife’s frustrations with people calling the house about work issues. I am sure … Continue reading

The Real Problem with Homeschooling

I’ve only been homeschooling for a few years. . .my oldest is in third grade. But like all homeschoolers, I’ve heard my fair share of objections. I’m either unqualified (because you know, colors, numbers and shapes are so hard to master) or my children will be behind socially. I’ve pretty much accepted the fact that we’re misfits and I’m okay with that on a personal level. However, it has always bothered me on a more philosophical level. I mean, we live in a society that is pretty much “live and let live.” No one wants to be told how to … Continue reading

Ask a Homeschooling Blogger: Why Are You So Against Government Involvement?

To all of my readers, On occasion I receive letters either by e-mail or private message telling me how dumb we are for home schooling and how unsocial zed my children will be. I generally ignore them because they are so inflammatory they’re not worth responding to. I am always up for a good debate with well thought out arguments. I’m not interested in name calling. I have finally received a letter that at least to me, seems to be genuinely questioning the home schooling lifestyle as opposed to just writing meaningless dribble to spout off. In fairness, I need … Continue reading
