College Coeds Come Up With New Way to Calculate Calories Shed

How many calories do you burn in an average day? The only time I come close to knowing how many calories I’ve melted away is at the end of a treadmill workout when I stare intently at the digital summary. And even then I don’t see how the numbers add up (All that pain for a measly 512 calories?) Well, forget about treadmill and elliptical calorie counters, thanks to some ingenious college kids from Georgia Tech, we may soon be able to tell how many calories we’ve burned through basic daily movements. The students recently unveiled a carefully crafted round-the-clock … Continue reading

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick plans to unveil a report in the near future that will change the way that children cycle through education. The report comes from the Readiness Project that was created over a year ago. In the report the governor suggests that students in high school be allowed to take an exam that would allow them to graduate early. Students could possibly graduate from high school as early as 16 years of age. The plan also involves the recommendation that all college credits earned be universal throughout the college system. Therefore once a credit is earned it could … Continue reading

Transfer Students

At the beginning of each year teachers receive a class list of their students. The teachers in each grade level usually have about the same number of students in each class. The teacher with the fewest number of students gets prepared to receive the first transfer. By transfer student, I mean a student that comes from another school after the school year has already begun. Most teachers are not very excited about getting a transfer student. It can be especially hard for lower grade or primary teachers. These teachers typically have everything labeled and special instructions for parents and students … Continue reading

District Puts Breaks on Diplomas for Homeschoolers

In Iowa City homeschool parents have been enrolling their children in public school for the final trimester. of the 12 grade so they could receive a high school diploma. Superintendent Lane Plugge said district officials have seen a recent increase in homeschooled students transferring into the district for only one trimester to earn a diploma. The school board intends to put the breaks on this questionable behavior. A new policy may require students to be enrolled full time for two full years in order to receive a diploma from the district. The district would limit acceptable transfer credits to only … Continue reading

So Hands-On Is Not Better?

Wow! One study may just prove everything that I learned in my master’s teaching math courses to be wrong. As teachers we have been told for years now that children need hands on real life experiences. We are told that if they can connect what they are learning to real life that they learn better. We are also told that manipulative held children better understand concepts such as those that they learn in math. I, of course, assumed that all of this was researched based. I am now finding out that I was wrong. In fact one university is conducting … Continue reading

Wellspring Academies: Weight Loss Boarding Schools

The obesity epidemic in the United States has definitely improved profit margins for quite a few companies. In addition to websites playing upon the weaknesses of those trying to lose weight by offering them a “sure thing” diet, there are now schools created specifically for those between the ages of 11 and 24 who have the money to check in and get ‘er done. Wellspring Academies offer middle school, high school and college level academic programs, as well as summer programs, so that young people can simply transfer to their chosen school for a semester (a minimum of four months) … Continue reading

Homeschooling Middle School Kids

Homeschooling during the elementary school years means teaching kids the basics. It involves teaching, reading, writing, and basic math. Homeschooling during these early years also means setting your kids in the right direction in areas of emotional and social development. Homeschooling during the high school years means preparing your kids for adult life. This means intensive academic preparation for the college bound. It means internships for trade bound students. It also means slowly transferring adult responsibilities to your children and helping them learn to step into an adult role. Homeschooling middle school students are a different animal altogether. You have … Continue reading

Moving to a New School

In one of my previous articles, I discussed why some teachers are leery of getting a transfer student. In some cases a transfer student may mean trouble will follow. In other cases, transfer students can mean more work and training time for the teacher. It can also be difficult if the child is academically ahead or behind in the textbook or work that the class is presently completing. In the last article I took a stand point more from a teacher’s point of view. In this article I will look at transferring schools more from a student’s point of view. … Continue reading
