Do You Support Zero Tolerance?

Many schools have adopted zero tolerance rules. Zero tolerance means that no exceptions are allowed and all cases are treated with the same seriousness. Since zero tolerance rules were placed, there have been many discussions and controversies over whether or not the rule is fair. Most zero tolerance rules deal with violence and drugs. Deciding if zero tolerance is a good policy or a bad policy is a hard decision. While most of us think that there should be no exceptions for violence or drugs at school, there are some unique cases to consider. When most people think of drugs … Continue reading

Read This Before Sending Medicine to School

What if your child needs medication while he or she is at school? Many antibiotics and other medicines call for three doses a day. Taking medicine at school is not as easy as it once was. Due to drugs and dangers with over the counter and prescription medicines, schools have cracked down on students taking medications while at school. If you plan on having your child take some type of medicine while he or she is at school, plan on filling out paper work and jumping through hoops. In most school districts, no medicine is allowed at school unless the … Continue reading

No Touching at School

Thanks to Heather, a recent story was brought to my attention. It seems that a middle school in Vienna, Virginia has taken the “keeps your hands to yourself” rule one step further. The middle school decided to enforce a new policy that states that children are not allowed to touch one another. The school is strict about upholding its policy and the school administrator defends the rule. The new rule helps the school keep control in locations such as the hallways and the cafeteria. Some parents and students are not so thrilled about the school’s strict course of action. One … Continue reading

Have Schools Gone Too Far With Their No Tolerance Policy?

Many schools, especially high schools, have enforced a policy they call “No Tolerance.” Basically, it states that anyone involved in a fight is suspended. In many schools, a fight consists of both physical altercations as well as verbal. Often times, the police are called out to make a report. I have to say, while I understand their point of wanting to crack down on violence and threats, I am not sure I am a big fan of this policy. Let me explain. I have a student who is a high school senior. He happens to have just turned 18 as … Continue reading

Reasons I am glad We Homeschool: Zero Tolerance

There were two stories about problems in school on the local news yesterday. The first was about a 14 year old that was suspended for five days because she was in a picture where other kids were flashing gang signs. The second was about a teacher who tied the wrists of students together on a museum field trip because they were misbehaving. The teacher was “disciplined.” I am having trouble understanding this. The 14-year-old student was standing among a group when someone decided to take a picture. She smiled, and others made gang signs with their fingers. She has been … Continue reading

Education A to Z: Z for Zero Tolerance Going Too Far?

My final blog in the Education A to Z blog series. I want to focus today on zero tolerance. Let me start by stating that I truly support schools in their plan of zero tolerance. I think it is a great idea, but am I the only one who thinks, at times, that schools go too far with making a point or in their stance on zero tolerance? I agree it keeps kids more safe in school and it shows kids that certain behaviors will just not be tolerated at school. However, there are cases when schools may have gone … Continue reading
