The Break and The Work 2

Last time I promised to talk about getting yourself running that next race with some breaks in between. The “race” I’m talking about is the constant progression and search for knowledge. While classes may in fact end at some point, and be marked by the thick border of a lengthy break, the progression of students (and their interests) is another matter entirely. It’s a difficult task to convince yourself to continue working while you’re on a much deserved vacation. While I think my qualifying exams generally trump others’ legitimate successes in the “painful, long, and difficult” categories, I do think … Continue reading

Summer of Woes

Summertime is supposed to be filled with laughter and joy for those in the academic world. The summer is for resting, relaxing, and sipping on iced drinks from a folding chair in the sunshine. Summertime means you’ve completed that final test, graded that final paper, added those final grades to your transcript and have fewer worries until the fall semester begins those concerns anew. This is not true for me this summer and I only recently realized how bad it is going to be. Over 5,700. Go ahead… read that number again. Feel it labor your mouth into forming the … Continue reading

End of Semester Woes 2

Earlier this week I posted part 1 of “End of Semester Woes” and I continue that here. If you haven’t read the first part it might be helpful to read that here. At any rate, these are my feelings at the close of the semester as an instructor and an student. Today I’ll be focusing on screwing up as a student, seeking forgiveness (maybe too late), and what to hope for. It’s a peculiar fact of life (it doesn’t have to be a fact but it seems to be) that students, no matter how much they are warned, don’t do … Continue reading

Internet woes (part 2): Online shopping and endless web searching

Continuing the theme of Internet woes, part two of this three part series on Internet woes will discuss two more troubles of the Internet: online auctions and shopping and endless web searching (see part one for a two other troubles). ● Online auctions and shopping. It is easy to get caught up in buying things online. It’s even easier when you buy from the same companies who conveniently store your credit card and account information for quick checkout. What used to take hours and days of going store to store or to our favorite mall, now takes a matter of … Continue reading

Read the Syllabus

Since I’m not a troubled instructor this semester (and I’ve taken the role of a dutiful TA) I am being re-introduced to the simultaneous joy and terror of a large, introductory course. It is at this point that I feel I must return to one of my favorite sayings: read the syllabus. The reason for this decree is because of the overwhelming amount of email I’ve been receiving recently. “How do I…” “Can you tell me…” “Do you know if…” etc. These types of questions are smothering my inbox during these first weeks and it is an unfortunate reality that … Continue reading

Wrapping up Strong

It’s that time of year again in academia. The year is wrapping up and finals are around the corner. The students are getting excited about a longer break and a period of time without homework or assigned readings. Some of them have even decided to take a look at their grades that have been available to them twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week since the beginning of the semester. Some of them have also, upon recommendation, decided to look at that pesky syllabus I drone on about frequently. I can hear it all around me: the end … Continue reading

A New Club

I recently found out that two of my co-workers have children. Since these two individuals hold positions in academia that I aspire to it was nice to know that I wouldn’t be alone in parenthood. I’m certainly feeling the gentle tug of doubt this semester as I am still in preparation for my final exams. Since I’m also teaching, doing graphic design, working on my dissertation, and staying home with our son my time feels shorter than ever. With a book constantly by my side and a computer never far away I am constantly aware of the amount of work … Continue reading
