Aesthetic Presentation

When I was in grade school I remember loathing presentation day in school. I didn’t hate it because I was afraid to present (I wasn’t) or because I thought it was boring (I don’t think I did). I loathed it because some student would inevitably bring in a huge piece of poster board that they’d spend hours writing all over in every different color. That’s not so bad, you say. You could be correct. Most of the time, however, it really was that bad. The single thing that got under my skin like nothing else, the thing that drove my … Continue reading

Final Presentation

I just finished a day where I had to give two 20 minute presentations over two topics in one day. This was an interesting project for me because I really like to give personal presentations without notes or specifically written down arguments in order to let those listening influence my presentation held together by the forward progress of selected slides. On a day when one presentation determined my ability to continue as a doctoral student there was no room for error (Don’t worry, I passed). I’ve never so fully planned out and plotted a presentation before. One of the things … Continue reading

Finals Fears

I don’t have any scientific data to back me up on this (though it may exist) but I’m quite certain I’ve figured out at least one reason I tend to score fairly well on tests for courses, classes, and other evaluative procedures. Today I took a test. I took a big test. The test covered 2500 years (actually much more) of topics, over 3000 pages of material, an innumerable variety of topics, approximately 12 in-depth student presentations, a couple of in-class videos, and some other abstract topics. It covered countries all over the world and performance practices and practitioners from … Continue reading

Make the Most of Theme Cruises

Theme cruises are more popular now than ever before.  What started off as a way for like-minded travelers to bond at sea has turned into a multi-million dollar niche; however, cruise companies aren’t the only ones benefitting from these unique voyages.  Passengers also gain in more ways than one when booking a theme cruise.  Not only do guests enjoy all the services and amenities associated with a regular cruise, they also get the added bonus of partaking in a specific passion, be it music, cooking, writing or scrapbooking. Helping stretch passengers dollars at sea is Holland America.  The cruise company … Continue reading

Things I Learned From a Cemetery Tour

On Halloween, my husband and I went on a historical tour of the oldest cemetery in the town that we lived in. This is the first one we have gone on together, and the first I’ve attended in years. I learned so many things! The town I live in has a Mission. The Mission Cemetery wasn’t located near the Mission itself. I learned that where it currently stands was not the original location of the cemetery. It had been moved several times before it arrived at its permanent location. Sometimes, the reason for moving the cemetery was financial. The real … Continue reading

Woman Fuses Glass to Raise Money for Autism

An artist in California is doing something really unique that raises money for autism. What started out as a simple selection of a shape to create with fused glass turned into a design that fits nicely with groups who want to raise awareness of, and funding for, autism research. Janine Stillman is a glass artist. She creates jewelry using fused glass. This technique involves stacking, or layering, very thin sheets of glass on top of one another. Usually, the layers are different colors. It can be used to create unique, colorful, patterns after the glass has been melted in a … Continue reading
