Get Ready for the New School Year

The new school year might begin for your kids in August or early September. You probably are aware of the need for new school supplies, school appropriate clothing, and an established bedtime. Many parents forget about the less obvious things that come with a brand new school year. Here are a few to be aware of so you will be ready when they appear. Strong Emotions In general, children tend to experience a lot of strong emotions at the start of a brand new school year. While some kids will be excited to start school again, many will express frustration … Continue reading

Get Creative for Fall

May lightning not strike me down for writing about autumn scrapbooking in mid-August. Sure, Halloween Express has already opened its doors for business in my neck of the woods, but that doesn’t mean I’ve got my costume picked out. I prefer to ease in and out of seasons, and for me, summer is especially hard to say goodbye to. Still, many kids around the country have already bid adieu to days spent at the pool and park. School is back in session for students in Georgia, Hawaii and parts of California. The start of a new academic year is a … Continue reading

Being Ready for Anything

One of the things you can always count on is change. I realized this recently. I have a rather odd job that I’m not going to get into here (as it isn’t that important), but the reality of my particular position is that there is occasionally time when there is literally nothing to do. My actual job, during these times, is to simply wait. To be present. To exist. And, as it turns out, it doesn’t matter how I exist during these periods of time. I could sit, stand, jog, read, write, recite poetry: whatever. Now, while all jobs aren’t … Continue reading

Getting Ready for Graduation

My daughter’s school got rid of kindergarten graduation a few years back. The decision annoyed some parents. Personally, I was a bit disappointed for my daughter. After attending her cousin’s kindergarten commencement ceremony, she was excited that she too would be able to participate in the pomp and circumstance when it was her time to graduate. But, alas, it was not meant to be. I ended up having to host a mini graduation program/party myself, so she would have something to look forward to on the last day of school. If you are left to plan your little one’s kindergarten … Continue reading

Eat Already!!

One of my most frustrating things as a parent right now is meal time. It seems like my two year old and four year old get up to the table, eat a few bites, and then just want to play. They will stay in their chairs and make silly faces, or silly noises, and make the other one laugh. They don’t pay attention to the task in front of them…eating. It’s driving me insane!! I noticed the problem with eating begin several months ago. Now that my 2 year old is more fun to play with, his big sister takes … Continue reading

Spanish Speaking Kindergarten

Today, my husband and I went to check out a Kindergarten class at the school that my daughter will most likely be attending in the fall. This class was a little different than your average Kindergarten class because it was a Spanish immersion program. I went away with mixed feelings about what was right for my preschooler. In our school district, you have to get ready for Kindergarten early. This includes testing your child for the Extended Learning Program, which can be compared to a gifted program in other school districts. Not every elementary school offers these classes, and they … Continue reading

Get Ready for Kindergarten

Now, that my daughter is in preschool, kindergarten seems years away. But, in reality, it is only a few months down the road. This will be my first child entering Kindergarten, so I didn’t know much about the process of getting her enrolled for school. After talking to a friend yesterday, I had a little panic session. I live in an open-enrollment school district, meaning that I can apply to enroll her into any kindergarten classroom in the school district. Preferential treatment is always given to people living within a school’s boundaries, but it does leave some room for some … Continue reading

Tools to Teach Kindergarten

Homeschooling your Kindergartener will come with challenges, frustration, joy, and so much fun. Kindergarteners are naturally curious so this can make learning both difficult and easy. Difficult because the child often gets distracted and wants to veer off to the left of your straight path. Easy in the sense that you get a student ready, willing, and able to learn anything and everything she sees. It’s up to you to find the proper tools to guide your little student down the right path. I hear “What curriculum should I use for my Kindergartener?” all the time. It is reasonable that … Continue reading

Homeschooling Kindergarten

This homeschooling year will be significant as I have one child entering her first year of junior high and another starting Kindergarten. This will be my third time teaching Kindergarten. I am so grateful that I have one more time to teach it after this. Teaching Kindergarten is one of my favorite things. I just love the finger paint, art projects, reading lessons, math lessons, hands on activities, and curiosity about the world these little students possess. Kindergarten is the time to build future students who are curious, creative and critical thinkers. But don’t let that pressure you one bit … Continue reading
