What Type of Teachers Do Middle School Students Like?

In a few of my previous articles I have discussed what parents like about teachers and why some teachers get more requests from parents than others. Recently, I began discussing what it is about teachers that students like. As stated in my article, I discussed how the age of the child typically determines what type of teacher the child enjoys the most. As the child ages and matures, his or her interests and needs change. Their likes and dislikes about teachers also change. My first article described the characteristics of teachers that pre kindergarten and kindergarten students like best along … Continue reading

Homeschool Questions: Keeping Preschool Fun

“Q: A lot of people are anti – schooling for preschool age, but by 4yr. old is asking to play school, and wants to do “home work” like his cousins. A friend was generous enough to give me a preschool activity book. I’ve tried to stay away from “instructing” him by counting cars and sorting colors of marbles, but when he’s playing, he gets frustrated with me when I suggest counting or sorting in the situation. But then later he’ll say, “I want to have school” and pull out that activity book and work/play in it for quite a while. … Continue reading

If your kids attend public school, be sure to mark your calendar for Give Kids Good Schools Week, which takes place the week of October 15-21. Head over to the Give Kids Good Schools organization’s website, where you can learn about how to insure your children receive quality public education. The organization’s goal is to get parents and the public to work for public school reform. Keeping Good Teachers

In a previous article, I discussed the challenges of finding and keeping experienced and skilled teachers. Some states are beginning to track teacher performance by examining student gains. While tracking the gains of students from one year to the next can help administrators and school leaders see which teachers are possibly more effective, it too has it downfalls. States should never solely place a teacher’s creditably and worth into student gains on a state test. There are some factors that a teacher just cannot control. Class size and student economics are a couple. One of the problems is that the … Continue reading

We Need Inner City Children to be Inner City Teachers

It has been a long time issue that inner city schools often have the hardest time keeping and hiring qualified teachers. Cities, such as Milwaukee, face trouble with teachers leaving and moving to more suburbanized areas. As it stands, Milwaukee has a policy that requires teachers to live in the area. Some have thought that more teachers might stay at Milwaukee’s Public Schools if they were allowed to live elsewhere. Many of the teachers do not want to live in the area because they would have to send their own children to the public schools. There is no easy answer … Continue reading

My Inner-City Story: 3 Types of Teachers

I have been living, tutoring, teaching and working with families in the inner city now for ten years. I have seen many teachers come and go. I have seen teachers come in to “rescue” the poor inner city children and I see teachers who feel like they can really make a difference. And they soon discover that they can’t–at least no with that attitude. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let me start with a disclaimer. I know that in one sense my inner city experience is unique. It’s unique even than other parts of New York. But there is … Continue reading

What Does the Bible Teach us About Good Company? Part 1

The following are some points that I’m sharing based on Biblical scripture about keeping good company (I’ve referenced to chapter and verse after each point for personal study): If someone wants to teach you anything different than Christ has taught us, don’t invite him in your home, don’t encourage him, or you will be taking part in his wickedness. (2 John10) Don’t engage with those who are doing evil or testify on their behalf in a dispute perverting justice. (Exodus 23:2) When we follow the ways that good men do, we are keeping on the path of righteousness. (Proverbs 2:20) … Continue reading

Is Your Home on Lock Down?

Today, as I was walking to my daughter’s school to pick her up, I glanced to my right at the top of my street and noticed that there were about a dozen cop cars. I asked a bystander what was going on, and he didn’t know, but said that guns were drawn. I immediately worried about getting my daughter from school even though it was in the opposite direction. I soon found out that her school was on lock-down. As I walked to school, I just knew that everything was going to be fine. I said a little prayer we … Continue reading
