Keeping Your Faith at College – Part 2

Last month I looked at keeping your faith at college. I’m going to make a few more suggestions in this area today. Don’t cut yourself off from opportunities. Just because you’ve always belonged to one denomination doesn’t necessarily mean that’s the right one for you. When our daughter went to university she, like a few others, I know found she was not fitting in to the Anglican Church she attended. She got lost in the sheer size of the congregation and found it hard to mix. After a while she opted out and went along to a Baptist church which … Continue reading

Keeping Your Faith at College

Keeping your faith when you go off to college or university can be a real test for some young people. So what can you do to ensure that you don’t over commit and get caught up in the whirl of activities and neglect your spiritual life? Here are some suggestions based on the experience with our own children and those of friends’ children who have gone away to college or university. If you know any people who are already attending that college, get information from them about the types of groups that are available, If not the college will always … Continue reading

How to Keep Your Pet from Cheating on You

In keeping with the theme of the last couple of days, I couldn’t very well talk about unfaithful pets and cats adopting other people without examining ways to keep your pet from straying. Over in Marriage, infidelity is a hot topic. I’m of the camp that believes one of the factors that causes a husband to stray is because he’s not getting enough attention at home. I figured based on other people interviewed in the MSNBC.com article “Getting dogged: When your pet cheats on you” by Kim Campbell Thornton that it would stand to reason that’s why pets cheat too. … Continue reading

Keeping a Prayer Journal

Keeping a prayer journal can be a great aid in building your faith. Journaling your prayers is so helpful in keeping track of what you have prayed for as well as serving to remind you of prayer needs as they arise. The journal can become a wonderful recorded testimony of the Lord’s faithfulness in your life as prayer requests become answered. Keeping a prayer journal doesn’t just help keep track of prayer requests but serves as a testimony of your progressing walk with the Lord. Every now and then I’ll look back at my older writings. Sometimes I’m able to … Continue reading

Don’t Put It Off

Have you ever felt that urge to pray for someone? You don’t know why but you feel prompted to pray. Can I urge you not to ignore it? The Lord God often puts it on a person’s mind to pray for someone without knowing all the details. It is enough that God knows. This week a woman in our church testified how she had felt led to pray for those in our congregation. She didn’t know why but she was obedient. Unbeknown to her there had been a serious accident. A man from our congregation had found his son lying … Continue reading

At School Too Long?

Author, Hilary Mantel, created a furor recently when she suggested girls were ready to have babies at 14. While I am in no way agreeing with her on that, it did occur to me to wonder whether we are keeping young people at school too long and not allowing them to grow up. Years ago some of us will know from our own experience, others will know from parents and grandparents that young people left school much earlier. By 14-16 they had finished with school and were out in the workforce. In some case it was even earlier than that. … Continue reading

When to Pray

When should you pray? On the health blog Stephanie suggested praying while walking on the treadmill. It’s a good idea. I have been known to pray while out walking along a beach or just around the neighborhood. Of course it’s important to keep eyes open but it does help to be focused. Often things you see while walking, prompt the mind about things to praise God for or bring other people into your mind as you pass their house, so you can then pray for them. While praying when out walking can be good, really there is nowhere that we … Continue reading

How Much Should a Parent Help with Homework?

How much should a parent help with homework? That’s a question most parents face at some stage or another in their child’s education. Unfortunately some parents tend to take over and end up virtually doing the whole job themselves. They think they are helping. In reality they are not. Doing it for them teaches the child nothing. Often we learn best by doing it ourselves. It’s okay to show an interest or to explain if your child is not clear about what to do, but you should never take over the task and do it for them. The other danger … Continue reading

Bad Dads? You Decide

I know a dad who pays more money for airlines tickets to see his girlfriend than he does in child support. He also willingly shells out more cash to wine and dine said girlfriend in the course of three days than he does to feed his own child in an entire month. That’s on top of repeatedly placing the child in dangerous situations and consistently ignoring the child. So, does this make the guy a bad dad? He certainly doesn’t think so, and I would venture to guess that fellow fathers Jon Gosselin and Mel Gibson would agree. The aforementioned … Continue reading

General Conference: “Lay Up in Store”

In his talk “Lay Up in Store” Bishop Keith B McMullin speaks of the importance of preparing for the future. He begins by sharing the story of when he was a freshman in college. He learned through his chemistry class and his time on the football team, that he had not prepared enough. It was on his mission that he began to realize the importance of hard work. Bishop McMullin goes on to speak about the importance of preparing for the Lord’s Second Coming. He points out that leading up to this there will be troubled times, but if we … Continue reading
