Male Principals

Two of my past articles have discussed the various duties of school principals and the advantages of having a female in elementary school administration. While there are several pros to having a woman principal, there are also advantages to having a man in school leadership. In my past experiences, I have realized that parents, teachers, and students seem to refrain from pushing and pressuring a man as much as they do a woman. When I taught with a male teacher, parents tended to give me more of their complaints and concerns. Even if the two of us carried out similar … Continue reading

Female Principals

In a previous article I discussed the rise of female principals in elementary schools. At one point in time school principals were mainly male. Today, females make up at least half of all elementary school principals. There are both advantages and disadvantages to having a female school principal. I have worked for both a male principal and a female principal. Although both were good experiences, there were things that I liked and disliked about each. Females tend to be more popular as principals in elementary schools rather than high schools because females relate better to younger children. There are also … Continue reading

Principals

My county has recently undergone many changes in school administration. Some schools have received new principals while other schools have received the addition of an assistant principal. The new school year should be very exciting with many new ideas. The principal is the key element in the school’s mood and atmosphere. It is important for a school to have a positive, uplifting leader. When the faculty and staff are happy with their leadership, they are happier with one another. A school works best when teachers support one another. A good leader does more than give orders and dominant. A good … Continue reading

Kudos to the Freedom Writers

I think educators have such a hard job that every once in awhile I spotlight someone who does something fantastic. Recently, I gave kudos to Oprah Winfrey for starting a school in South Africa. Awhile ago, I gave kudos to a principal who spent the night on the roof as part of a reading challenge in his school. (You’ll definitely have to look at that blog for a more thorough explanation!) Today I’m giving kudos to Erin Gruwell and her students–”The Freedom Writers” You will likely here about this story soon as Hilary Swank is playing the part of Erin … Continue reading

Kudos to Oprah for Dreaming Big in South Africa

Yesterday, January 1, 2007 will make for a significant date in the lives of 150 girls in South Africa. 150 very fortunate girls began school at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, in Henley-on-Klip which is just south of Johannesburg. The academy is open to girls, ages 11 and 12, who show strong academic and leadership potential and whose families make no more than $787 dollars per month. It will eventually accommodate 450 girls. The $40 million dollar facility is lavish for sure, boasting an on site theatre, top notch study and science lab facilities, a library and a … Continue reading

Kudos to This Innovative Principal. . .

Who challenged his K-8th grade students to collectively read 10,000 books. He said that they could pick their reward. They chose to shave the initials “HP” (for Harrington Park where the school is located) and to send their beloved principal to the roof for an overnight. Apparently, when he initially made the deal, he thought it would take the student body until at least spring time to do it. But they met their goal much quicker than he had expected. So last night, he went up to the roof to spend the night outside. If you live in the North … Continue reading

What is Looping?

Sometimes educationalese leaves parents scratching their heads in bewilderment. For sure, there are new terms every year that must be explained to us poor common parents. While looping is not necessarily a new practice, it is becoming more and more common as schools scramble to meet NCLB (No Child Left Behind) laws. Looping is where elementary children stay with the same teacher for more than one year. I have seen this done two ways. The first is where Johnny goes to school and has Mrs. Smith for 1st and 2nd grade. Just to be correct, this is the true definition … Continue reading
