App-Schooling: New Tech Trend in Homeschooling

Computers and other forms of technology are no strangers to homeschooling.  Homeschool moms learned a long time ago that computers can aid the homeschool experience for both the student and the teacher.  If laptops gave our techie homeschool feet than the tablet gave it wings. Homeschool students and moms are finding the value in app-schooling.  App-Schooling is when a student uses a tablet and applications to study, reinforce lessons, or house lessons.  With tablet in hand, a homeschool student can unlock the door to the world one application at a time.  Homeschool moms can record, store, and plan, lessons. Homeschool portfoilos can … Continue reading

Using an iPad for Business

Working from home will almost always require a computer and an Internet connection. Being handcuffed to your desk all day to be in reaching distance of your keyboard is the last thing most of us want. Many are looking for alternatives methods to getting work done on the go or even sitting on their front porch. Laptops are a popular way many have found to take their office on the road. Recently, I mentioned how I was able to use my iPhone for business. The apps available such as Paypal, Pages, TurboScan, and Blogsy, are making freelance writing and other … Continue reading

Is It Almost Time For A New Computer?

If you are like many people, then your computer is an essential part of your home, to say the least. You may use it for work, your family uses it for entertainment, and everyone uses it to stay connected with friends and relatives. Everyone in your house (except perhaps the baby and the dog) uses the computer. How do you know that the computer that you use every day will work tomorrow, when you need to send out that important email or your child has to do some research for a school project? Like many electronics, computers have a life … Continue reading

No More Textbooks: Online Teaching Materials

In all areas of the country, technology is on the rise. Education has likely seen the greatest increase4 over the past few years. Teachers are now using more technology in their teaching and students are now using more technology in their learning. Technology has now become as much of a classroom necessity as paper pencil and chalkboard. Teachers are relying on technology for teaching ideas, teaching strategies, and even students and teacher communication. My district now completes lesson plans on line. Lesson plan books have become nearly extinct in my area. Teachers are assigning PowerPoint presentations and Internet research projects. … Continue reading

Vocabulary word of the day: Resilient (Re-zil-yent)

The American Heritage Dictionary describes resilient as “Marked by the ability to recover readily, as from misfortune”. An example of a resilient person would be someone who functioned well in the midst of tragedy. Homeschoolers have to be resilient. When homeschooling is a part of one’s life, it is hard to ignore that fact that sometimes life gets in the way. Kids have to be taught that learning is a part of everyday life so that every opportunity to learn something is seized. Learning continues both in the midst of tragedy and in the midst of unadulterated fun. Today we … Continue reading

Laptop vs. Desktop

Do you have a laptop or a desktop computer? I recently purchased a laptop computer which I absolutely love. Before I bought my previous computer I was forced with the decision “Laptop or Desktop?” I love the portability of laptops, but at the time I decided the slightly less expensive desktop computer was a better choice. Desktops are easier to upgrade, have larger hard drives and are a little more difficult to steal. At the time I made my purchase I lived in a college dorm and was concerned about the possibility of my roommate leaving our door unlocked one … Continue reading
