Home School Blogger Spotlight: Ready. Set. Read!

Teaching a child how to read can be a daunting task. As a homeschooler and writer about homeschooling topics, one of the most popular questions behind teaching math is teaching how to teach a child to read. Many are intimidated by the task. It does not make things easier that a student is to reading as a leaf to the wind. I had one child who taught himself how to read, one who struggled and currently one who gravitates to numbers, and one more who can “read” her name at two. Learning More About Shooting Constellations

As I continue my series on astrophotography I thought it might be helpful to discuss some of the places that are available for you to receive hands on lessons in the subject. I got my first taste of astrophotography at Chicago’s Alder Planetarium. Located along the banks of Lake Michigan, the center is a premier public resource for learning about astronomy. It is also staffed by some of the nation’s best astrophotographers. If you live in the area or are planning a trip to Chicago sometime in the near future I would highly recommend attending Alder’s Planetarium’s “Far Out Fridays.” … Continue reading

Free Centers

In previous blogs, I have discussed learning centers, tips for learning centers, and how to creating learning centers. In my classroom, there are two types of centers. The first, the learning centers that I have previously discussed I normally call directed centers. These centers are teacher directed. Although the students work independently, the teacher gives directions and plans a desired outcome for the students to achieve. The second type of centers is known as free centers. The teacher does not direct free centers. There is no planed outcome or desired task for the student to accomplishment during this time. Free … Continue reading

Creating a Learning Center

Yesterday I discussed learning centers and offered some tips in managing them in a classroom. Learning centers can be great additions to a teacher’s curriculum. However, they must be created and carried out properly in order to be effective. This article will discuss how to create a learning center. The first step in creating a successful learning center is to determine which skill the center will be designed to reinforce. A center should focus on one or two specific skills to which students have previously been introduced. Because centers are independent and student directed, do not try to introduce new … Continue reading
