Learning the Real Rules of Life

I recently finished reading “The Real Rules of Life: Balancing Life’s Terms with Your Own” by Ken Druck, sent to me in exchange for a review. This is probably one of the most life-impacting books I have ever read. In fact, I plan on reading it again but taking more time with it. There was so much to take in and the opportunity to really apply what you read. I greatly appreciate not only the effort that went into this book but the heart as well. “The Real Rules of Life” was written after the author’s loss of his 21-year-old … Continue reading

Lifelong Learning

Some people are lifelong students. They are always willing to learn something new. They’re always seeking something new to devote their time and mind to (the talent may come later). One of my favorite stories are of the elderly learning computers. All of the sudden they are able to communicate instantly with family and friends (possibly even by video) because of the amazing technological advances in recent years. Learning is a valueable thing and the desire to learn is strong in certain people. I used to wonder why math is important and now I use math every day (as an … Continue reading

Using Newspapers and Magazines for Fun Learning

Making use of things around the house for learning inspires creativity for both the teacher and student. It is also a way to develop a lifelong learner as all surroundings will teach lessons and inspire thought. Being resourceful also saves your pocketbook from losing too much valuable weight. Old newspapers, magazines and even phone books can be used for such purposes. Before you throw your old publications in the recycle bin think about recycling them into educational tools. Here are ways to squeeze some fun learning out of the Sunday paper: Letter Hunt. Give your child a highlighter, pencil or … Continue reading

Learning to Sing: hearing the music in your life – Clay Aiken

I admit it freely – I’m a huge American Idol fan. I didn’t watch it the first year, but the second year, when Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken were vying for the title, I was a religious watcher. There was just something about Clay that made me genuinely like him. I was disappointed when he didn’t win, but knowing that he’s been tremendously successful helped me to get over it. “Learning to Sing” is Clay’s story, told in his own words. Surprisingly, it’s not a blow-by-blow of everything that happened at American Idol; that chapter of his life only takes … Continue reading

Oh the Places You Could Go!

Imagine for a moment that you could go anywhere you wanted to go. Where would that be? What places would your children like to visit? What experiences would inspire research or lifelong hobbies? What cultures would get your kids excited to pursue a new language or delve into a new art form? We’ve dabbled in on-the-road homeschooling, and we’ll continue to do so for the simple reason that my daughter and I adore traveling. She likes the planes, trains, and automobiles and is intrigued by new places. I enjoy experiencing new cultures and ecosystems. We make a good traveling team. … Continue reading

Juggling

When I was in fifth grade I learned to juggle three balls. This was a great success for me. My mother had taught me long ago how to juggle two balls. I’d been interested in performing since I was young and juggling certainly fit the bill. As such, I admired jugglers and magicians and all sorts of performers when I was young, and each time I saw a juggler successfully juggle three balls I felt a pain in my heart because I couldn’t do it. But then came fifth grade. Then came my juggling, magician, math teacher. Then came the … Continue reading

A Little Faith

Sometimes you just need to have a little faith. I’m not talking about religion — I’m talking about education. One of the things I’m working on this semester is bringing some new exercises to some new(ish) artists. These exercises are on the newer side of things for this particular area but tried and true in others. The point is this: sometimes you’ve got to go along with something, even if it doesn’t make sense to you, to get the full benefit. If you only resist then you certainly will not succeed. It kind of reminds me of the saying that … Continue reading

The Basics of Horse Care, Pt. 1

With the Christmas season approaching many of us might be considering giving pets as gifts. I’ve always been clear on my stance: don’t give any animal as a surprise present. Make sure the giftee knows what he or she is receiving and is ready and willing for the responsibilities which come with that particular animal. Maybe some of you are actually thinking about purchasing a particular pet that was always my special holidays dream: a horse. Sure I wanted a dog, but I always thought that might be within the realm of possibility. A horse is what I always wanted … Continue reading
