Disney Buys Lucasfilm, Now Owns Star Wars

This is probably the hugest and craziest Disney news story I’ve ever heard, and possibly ever will, I can’t think of anything bigger: this week, Walt Disney Company announced that it is buying Lucasfilm for about $4 billion dollars. That’s right: Disney will own Star Wars. The news is entirely shocking. In the past year George Lucas has announced his intention to retire from film making, or at least big-budget film making, instead focusing on smaller projects. But no one expected him to sell his company (Lucas is the sole owner), and certainly not to Disney. When one thinks about … Continue reading

Providing Stability Through Schedules

By far one of the most difficult things you will face as you are going through the divorce process is the issue of parent time, formerly known as visitation. It is important to have this spelled out in your decree because it will save you the trouble of fighting over it later. Just because you agree on something at the time of the divorce doesn’t mean that someone won’t change their mind later. If it’s not in writing, there is nothing binding you to that agreement and you are in for a real mess down the line. Having a set … Continue reading

Schedule Everything!

I never realized how important a schedule was until I was a mom. When I became a single mother I found that schedules were even more important than I thought, and not just for Hailey, for me too. I soon discovered in the first months of craziness that is single parenting that I could not get a thing done. Laundry would be washed but not folded, dinner cooked but not cleaned up, grocery lists made but forgotten. Everything quickly got out of hand. I had to get my home life under control so I could make sure that Hailey and … Continue reading

Flexible Schedules Work For Parents

In the world of traditional work, your shift begins at the time when you are scheduled to be at work. Unless you call in sick or find a co – worker to cover some or all of your shift, there is little room for flexibility. If something happens and your daily routine gets changed around a bit, you may have to work when you are rather tired if the change affected your sleep. Working from home can be much kinder and gentler in that regard because many times, you are able to decide when you work. This makes working from … Continue reading

Thankful For My Office Equipment Upgrade

There is a crazy amount of thunder and lightning outside, but I’m doing quite all right at my kitchen table home office. Fortunately, the kids are not at all bothered by all of the flashing and crashing so I am able to carry on with the evening’s work as scheduled. A few minutes ago, I began to worry about whether the electricity will be knocked out by the storm. Mid – worry, I caught myself. I realized that I no longer need to be overly concerned about losing electricity for one night, thanks to a wonderful birthday gift that I … Continue reading

My House Is Not Clean

Do you have a method to your housekeeping or is it more hit or miss? I’m totally a hit or miss housekeeper. My house stays fairly neat but the cleaning is not on any type of schedule. If I walk into a room I might notice the baseboards need to be dusted and dust them. The furniture in that room will most likely not get dusted at the same time. Or maybe I notice fingerprints on the bathroom door. I’ll wipe those down but that doesn’t mean I will clean the bathroom. In the morning when I’m brushing my teeth … Continue reading

Demystifying Mystery Shopping

When you work from home, you have the freedom to decide how many businesses you have and how many hours you devote to them. Sometimes it makes sense to have only one business, especially if you can find enough work to keep your schedule full. Other times, it makes sense to have a second business or a business that is sort of a sideline. One sideline that can fit well with a home – based professional lifestyle is mystery shopping. Companies want to know what it is like to be a customer in their business locations. How long do patrons … Continue reading

My Day Planner Saves Me

If you are a single mother you better also be a master of organization. Since there is only you to take care of everything you need to make sure your calendar runs like a well oiled machine. Kids always need to go somewhere and when they are too young to drive there’s just you to get them there and back. Juggling work responsibilities, sports practices, doctors visits, school meetings and sleepovers can make your head spin. If you don’t write it down you will forget. Do you have a calendar that you use, or like many of us, are there … Continue reading

I’m Losing My Mind!

My keys are gone. This is no surprise as this happens frequently, but it reminds me once again that I am losing my mind! Many parents feel this way from time to time, but as a single parent I think it gets worse…much, much worse! There’s no one there to remind you to reschedule that doctor’s appointment next week or that your son has soccer practice after school today or that your daughter has piano lessons at 3, you’ve got to keep everything straight on your own. The easiest way for me to do that is to have a calendar … Continue reading

The Second Letter from the Homeowners Insurance Company

This all started with a puddle on the floor. My husband and I made a claim with the company that we have a homeowners policy with. We got three letters in the mail from our insurance company. In a previous blog, I went over what one of the letters said. Here is what the second letter was all about. This blog is a continuation of the steps involved in making a claim to my homeowners insurance company. It all started with a puddle on the floor. Water had somehow seeped in through the wall during a hard rain. My husband … Continue reading
