Save Money by Planning Ahead

Dear overachiever mom who attached stuffed animals to the Valentine’s Day cards your kid passed out at school last week:  I don’t hate you.  Never mind, that all my 8-year-old Scotch-taped to her Snoopy Love Day cards were small packages of Skittles.  Not six-inch plush puppies.  I’m sure you never intended to make the rest of us parents feel like inadequate, uninspired, cheap losers. Listen, I considered flexing my creative muscle and having my kid attach snack-sized bags of peanuts to the cards.  Get it?  Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Lucy… the Peanuts gang?  Of course, sending nuts to school in this … Continue reading

Getting Ready for Back to School: Smooth Mornings

If there is one thing I dread about the start of a new school year, it is the mornings. I’m hoping other moms of teens can relate to the sometimes frustrating task of trying to wake a sleepy child. Although I may not be able to do much about that, I do know that I can help us get ready for the new school year by at least planning for a smooth morning. The key to this is preparing the night before. It used to be that most of the preparations fell on me. But in the past few years … Continue reading

Too Cool for School

My 7 going on 17-year-old daughter thinks she’s too cool for just about everything these days, including third grade. Fortunately, I am not letting her attitude affect my tradition of documenting each and every detail associated with the first day of school. Classes resume next week. Yes, summer is almost officially over in our neck of the woods. My digital camera is as ready as my daughter’s new backpack and individual labeled No.2 pencils. I am planning to capture the day live as it unfolds in front of my lens. Then, as I have done for the past three years, … Continue reading

My High School Graduate

I am now officially the mother of a high school graduate. It is hard to describe that feeling of watching your son walk across the stage to accept their diploma. A chapter in his life has closed and a new one begins. The past few days I have been doing a lot of reminiscing in my mind. I can still clearly remember the day we brought him home from the hospital. My husband and I couldn’t get enough of him. We took hundreds of pictures and videos. Try to explain to your third child why there are so few of … Continue reading

Texas Yearbook Labels Some Students as “Mentally Retarded”

A high school in Texas has a big problem with their yearbooks. Someone decided to add the label of “mentally retarded” to the photos of several students who had disabilities. The yearbooks have been collected and are going back to the printer, but, this is not enough for the parents of some the students who were affected by this situation. There is something special about a high school yearbook. Teenagers look forward to receiving their yearbook. They excitedly pass them around, and sign the yearbooks of their friends. Imagine how upsetting it would be to open your high school yearbook … Continue reading

January Check In: New Year’s Resolutions in Housekeeping

It’s the end of January, which means checking in to see how you are doing with your New Year’s Resolutions. Not everyone includes housekeeping in their list of things to change but this blog might get you thinking about it. The biggest thing I had on my mind for the year 2012 was to cook more often for my family. I am happy to say that I have adopted a meal plan that is really working. It feels so good to accomplish something. But at the same time, I know that I need to address other areas in my home, … Continue reading

Heading Back to School

Many of us, myself included, are heading back into our homeschool routines tomorrow. Some of us only took time off for the holidays – I’ve been in the Twilight Zone the last month because of a car accident, and so I’m having to reacclimatize myself to the whole thing. Whether you took a week off, two weeks off, or a month off from school, you’ll find the same challenges. 1. Motivation. It’s so easy to let school slide. If you’re tired or don’t feel well, school is one of the first things to go. And after time off, it’s really … Continue reading

There May Be New Guidelines For Autism in 2013

In May of 2013, the American Psychiatric Association is intending to release a revised set of guidelines that will be used to diagnose a person as having an autism spectrum disorder. There are some good reasons to create stricter standards. There are also some reasons why this is not a good idea. Right now, there is still a lot to learn about autism, autism spectrum disorders, and Asperger’s syndrome. There seem to be new theories popping up all the time about what could potentially be the cause of autism, and there is much debate about whether or not it needs … Continue reading

Planning for a New Year

The New Year is upon us and it is time to re-evaluate our homeschools. If you follow the traditional calendar then you have around five to six months left of school. Start the year off right by determining what needs to be changed to make the most of the last part of the school year. As homeschoolers we have the ability to be flexible and cut out what doesn’t work while keeping what does. Homeschoolers need to constantly evaluate the needs of our children and our homeschool. Here are some questions to ask yourself as you come off of winter … Continue reading
