The Danger of MegaSchools

There is a dangerous trend recently toward megaschools, schools that contain a large number of students at one school, anywhere from 500 to 2,000 students in one building. My own school district is considering doing this with our elementary school, and it scares me to no end. Megaschools can be convenient for school districts for a few reasons. A flux of incoming students can lead to overcrowding, and creating a new megaschool would address the problem, leaving room for further expansion. There is no doubt that many schools and school organizations are short when it comes to funding. Special clubs, sports groups, and other school affiliated groups often do not receive money from the school. Therefore, these groups are often left to resort to funding raising. Some groups carry out typical fund raising activities such as selling candy bars, doughnuts, or trinkets from a magazine. However some groups come up with much more unique ideas. My school just recently completed a magazine fundraiser sale. I see the need for schools to have fundraisers. The money allotted by state and local governments is not enough to purchase computers and instructional materials for schools. However, I always dread the fundraising part of the year. Today I want to tell you about Winn-Dixie – not about the money I saved shopping there but about the lives they helped to save by being a sponsor of the National Marathon to Finish Breast Cancer in Jacksonville, Florida.
