Easter at School

In a few previous articles I have questioned how much teachers and schools should put into holiday celebrations. Halloween and Christmas are two holidays that usually bring up some controversy in the school systems. Any time that religion can be a focus, parents can create an issue. Another holiday that is coming up soon is Easter. While Easter is typically not as controversial as Christmas or Halloween, it can bring up some discussion. Some people prefer to keep Easter as a religious holiday and pass up on the entire concept of the bunny, the eggs, and the hunting. Some schools … Continue reading

School Christmas Gift Exchange

Most teachers and schools have some type of Christmas party for their students. Due to a recent urge to encourage students to eat healthier, many parties throughout the year are not planned. However, Christmas is a special occasion and almost every celebrates the last day before Christmas vacation. In younger grades, Christmas parties are thought to be equipped with a gift exchange set up by the teacher. Older students usually bring gifts for friends and create their own gift exchange among groups of students. Some students may receive several gifts. Celebrating Christmas at School

Schools have different ways of doing different things. While all schools in my county have a different point of view on many topics, teachers also carry out things differently within a school. Right now, the lower grades (pre-K through 3rd) are attending school at a temporarily location. The rest of the school (grades 4th through 12th) has moved to the new campus. And I do mean campus. The school reminds … Continue reading

Should Halloween Be Observed At School?

When I was in school Halloween was a big deal. We could wear our Halloween costumes to school. We had a dress-up contest and those who participated got to parade up and down the hallway. For several years my school hosted a Fall Festival that included a haunted house. Today these things do not happen. In my area very few schools allow students to dress-up. If the students are allowed to dress-up they can only wear selected costumes. No scary costumes are allowed. The children must wear character or career outfits. The name Halloween is also carefully used in schools. … Continue reading
