Cooking with Your Young Baby

Cooking with a baby can be a lot of fun. Yes, it can be done. As I mentioned earlier, cooking together is a way of spending quality time and introducing your little one to all sorts of new experiences and life lessons. I started cooking with my children almost as soon as they were out of the womb, and you can too. Some people wait for the baby to nap before getting their cooking out of the way, but I always found it nice to be able to cook with your baby. By the way, if you missed the introductory … Continue reading

Spice Up Your Lessons with Food

As I have mentioned before, teachers must in some form be entertainers as well as teachers. While children must learn to some degree to be attentive and responsive without great reward other than self-satisfaction, teachers must also work to engage students as thoroughly as possible. Creative lesson plans are the best learning opportunities for students. When students are excited and actively engaged in a lesson, they learn more and remember it longer. Through the many various levels that I have taught I have learned that there is one lesson ingredient that is sure to spark even the least motivated child?s … Continue reading

My Little Turkey

That’s my little turkey during her second Thanksgiving meal. Her first Turkey Day celebration is a blur. She was pull-your-hair-out colicky and too young for solids. However, I’m positive she got at least a hint of spice while she was nursing, given how much pumpkin pie I scarfed down that day… and the next day… and the next day. I love pumpkin pie. But not as much as I love my little turkey. Only, she’s not so little any more. Now, she’s a big turkey, and she’s got the mouth to prove it. When she was a little, she’d wobble … Continue reading

More Theme Pages for Baby Scrapbooks

A new survey on expectant parents shows that more and more moms and dads-to-be are keeping the gender of their unborn child a delivery surprise. Not knowing the sex of a baby makes it a bit more challenging for the people throwing the baby shower, especially if said individuals are trying to design a baby scrapbook to present to the expectant guest of honor. If you are uncomfortable making a book that features generic layouts in gender neutral shades of green/yellow/tan, then consider creating a nursery rhyme theme. Not only are the colors universal, but the little ditties often teach … Continue reading

P is for Pumpkin

October is pumpkin season! Take advantage of this wonderful time of year to engage your child in learning and the world around him. Pumpkins seem to have a charm and appeal that makes kids delight over going to the pumpkin patch. If you don’t believe me try asking your children if they would like to go to the beet farm or squash patch instead. So head on out to the pumpkin patch for some fun and learning with your kids. A pumpkin patch makes an excellent field trip. Both kids and adults can enjoy cider, hayrides, and pumpkin picking. During … Continue reading

Marriage is a Lot Like Pizza

Marriage is a lot like pizza. It needs firstly a good solid and well rounded base to put the toppings on. Marriages need to be on a solid base of commitment and love and well rounded with time together and time apart, of conversation and of silence. Then the base needs to be spread with tomato paste or tomatoes. A marriage needs a good spread of love. The next thing Mick and I put on when making pizza is oregano and chili to spice it up. All marriages need to be spiced up at times. Then the toppings go on. … Continue reading

Teaching the Curriculum

Most teachers are given a textbook or some type of curriculum to follow. Many teachers worry that they will not be able to cover all of the material that they need to be teaching within the course of the school year. However, simply covering each lesson in a textbook from cover to cover does not mean that you are truly teaching. Teaching is about much more than regurgitating information from a book. Some teachers struggle between teaching what the students need and teaching what is needed for the tests. There are teachers who lean on both sides of this struggle. … Continue reading

Creating Lesson Plans

In many cases students in teacher education programs are required to create very detailed lesson plans for their teachers or supervisors. There are several different models and styles of lesson plans. One basic style is discussed below. Most lessons should begin with an opening or an attention getter. In this section you will describe what it is that you plan to do to gain the attention of the students. Before relaying important information to them, you must make sure that they are attentive to you and listening. The second part of your plan would be the lesson. This is where … Continue reading

St. Patrick’s Day Fun

In a past article I discussed a St. Patrick’s Day activity to share with your children or students at school. In this article I will discuss another fun and exciting activity that young children love on St. Patrick’s Day. I have also discussed how children love food activities at school. This activity involves both! While this activity may not be as educational as some discussed in the past, it is very fun and exciting for children. They love the mystery of it and it is sure to gain their attention form you for the rest of the day. Preparation: Before … Continue reading

St. Patrick’s Day Activity

In a previous article I discussed the importance of motivating students and getting them excited about learning. One way that I suggested to spice up lessons is with food. Children of all ages love manipulatives. However, when food is involved they simply cannot resist paying attention and getting involved. In addition to food, holidays make for great learning fun. Including both in your lessons can be a wonderful experience! Monday is St. Patrick’s Day and what better fun to kick off the week than with a box of Lucky Charms cereal? The cereal adds to the holiday spirit with rainbows, … Continue reading
