New School Year – New Problems With Bussing

A brand new school year means that changes in routine will occur. This can be really stressful for kids who have certain types of special needs. School just started, but already, there are problems with the busses that transport Special Education students to and from school. Children with autism rely on knowing that their day will have a set, expected, schedule. In school, a student may be using a laminated chart that shows what will happen first, next, and after that, for his or her entire school day. Or, the chart could be a digital one that is on an … Continue reading

Texting Your Child While in School

During a particularly difficult time for my daughter, she sent me a text one day from school. She needed to tell me something. I responded, she responded, I responded…it turned into a 20 minute “texting” conversation. All of this was while she was in a class. I felt a twinge of guilt. Should I really be texting my daughter while she is in school? I’m sure most parents would say no. But the circumstances wouldn’t allow me to say, “We’ll talk about it later.” The reality is that she may not have been ready to discuss what she was. Now … Continue reading

Parent of Child With Autism Fights School Over Bussing

A mother in Kentucky wants her daughter to be picked up by what the mother is calling a “short bus”. Her daughter has autism, and is prone to seizures when she becomes overstimulated. The school district has offered a large bus with very few students on it, instead. The mother is now fighting with the school about transportation. Angela Southern Roark is a single parent of a ten year old daughter. Neveah is autistic. She can experience epileptic seizures if she becomes overstimulated. Ms. Roark has asked the Fayette County Public Schools, the school system her daughter attends, to provide … Continue reading

College Students Need Insurance

It won’t be long before the new semester begins, and the college students will be back in school. Most families realize that their college bound offspring needs things like textbooks, new bedding, and perhaps their own computer. College students also need to have insurance coverage. College is expensive. Tuition seems to go up every semester. Textbooks cost a small fortune. There are fees to pay for the dorm, the meal plan, and possibly even a parking permit. Students who are living in apartments are going to have to come up with the money to pay rent, and also to buy … Continue reading

Going to High School Part Time

I was never the kind of kid who would skip class. No, in high school I was a superstar: diligent, focused, and driven. Now I look back and I wonder exactly what I was driving towards so intensely. While it’s unlikely that I would have come up out of my focused state to look around, smell the flowers, and consider other options and opportunities, I can promote that saner alternative to those who are students now. High school can be a pressure cooker, but why? There are many skills to be learned in the great, wide world. Taking some time … Continue reading

Insurance Study About Teen Drunk Driving Surprising

A study done by Liberty Mutual Insurance and SADD reveals interesting facts about teen drunk driving. The results show that the perception about when teens are most likely to drive after drinking doesn’t actually match up to the reality of when it is most likely to happen. Liberty Mutual Insurance partnered with Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) in order to do a national study that asked teens about their perceptions about when their peers were most likely to drive drunk. It also asked teens if they have ever driven while drunk, and asked when it was that they did it. … Continue reading

Since When Is Biking To School a Crime?

Since a school district in upstate New York made it one. Not surprisingly, the new bike ban is not sitting well with some local families. In fact, the Marino family of Saratoga Springs is doing more than simply complaining about the school rule that asks parents to keep their kids from walking or riding their bikes to class, they’re ignoring it. Janette Kaddo Marino and her son Adam made national headlines recently when they brushed off warnings from school administrators regarding their choice of transportation. Janette maintains that she and her son were not trying to cause any trouble when … Continue reading

The Truth about School Bus Drivers

In my previous article I discussed the importance of school support staff. I also talked about how these people were often misunderstood or not given the credit that they deserve. My previous article addressed educational assistants and custodians. In this article I will continue to address the support staff that help to make a school successful. Many think that school bus drivers do little work. They take the children to school and come pick them up in the afternoon to take them home. This is true. However it takes much more than being able to drive a bus to be … Continue reading

Auto Insurance and Students Away At College

Recently a Families.com member asked me about adding a college student to personal auto insurance: My son got his driver license this summer and is now in an out of state college. He is not going to drive while at school. However, when he is back for Christmas or Summer (may be for two to three weeks), he will drive our car. Should I include him in our auto insurance? Or should I include him in our auto insurance only during the period when he is back? Some agents claimed that including him all through the year will help him … Continue reading

Back-To-School Road Rules

Today our 5-year-old neighbor completed his first day of school. He’s been waiting for this day since the middle of summer. Each day since his mom bought him his new backpack (more than two weeks ago) he has come over to remind my 3-year-old daughter that he is “going to school to make a lot of new friends.” So today when I saw him standing outside posing for pictures by his mailbox wearing his brand new backpack I couldn’t resist grabbing my daughter and walking over to wish him well on his big day. Turns out we ended up walking … Continue reading
