The Daily Break

For a long period of time over the past summer (pretty much the whole summer), I was tucked away in a basement writing portions of what will become my dissertation. Writing a paper of any length can provide difficulties, and dissertations are no different. Difficulties abound. Spending day after day working on something relatively complex (and not necessarily straight forward, as my writing style for some reason requires) can be a taxing experience mentally. There needed to be some way that I could relax my mind (not necessarily my body) in order to keep productive, high quality work emerging through … Continue reading

The Wise Pseudo-Break

Sometimes it takes me a while to figure myself out. I’ve been doing a lot of reading this summer and for the past week or so I’ve been stuck on a book. It’s translated and it is dense. It uses big words and, while I’m no stranger to big words, this slows down my reading and comprehension… especially when the sentence length approaches the length of a page. So many ideas that it hurts to try to sit and read thirty pages. It is even kind of painful to try and read ten pages. The book is long though and … Continue reading

Books on Hand

So a while ago we moved across the country. The reasons are unimportant (you can read about them elsewhere), but this provided me the opportunity to re-imagine my office area in our new home. When we were living in Texas my office area consisted of a rather nice and large corner of our home… but it was in the living room, right next to the front door, the kitchen, the TV, the music, the toys, the on and on and on — got me? It was anything but ideal, but we made it work. (Oh! How I suffered!). It wasn’t … Continue reading

Back to Basics #2

Last time I said that I would “talk about the ‘basic’ remedy next time” and that next time is now. The basic remedy for the problem of distraction filled writing is simple: remove the distractions. There are positives and negatives but as far as I’m concerned the positives far outweigh the negatives. So, without any further wait I present the basic remedy: get away from the computer. In case you’re wondering the is yes: it is painful at first. If you’re like me you’ve spent a good portion of your life with a computer. You may have even grown up … Continue reading

Fondue Fun

Make dinner tonight a Fondue Feast for the whole family! Start with melted cheese served with apples slices, crispy bread cubes and celery and conclude with molten chocolate along side strawberries, brownie bits and cookies. In between, serve a traditional meal or go all the way with cook-your-own meats, poultry and veggies and cooking oils. What kid, big or small, doesn’t love to dip food into sauces, dressings or creams? Fondue presents an opportunity to dip EVERYTHING without the sideways glances or comments you might get otherwise. Personally, I do not care for the “upscale” fondue restaurants. The high prices … Continue reading
