A Blog of Sharing

I’ve been blogging here at Families.com for a while now and I’ve been enjoying it quite a bit. It took a while for me to get my own personal blog going (of things mostly unrelated to our son) but I finally got it up and running a while ago. It became a resource for another side of myself (primarily the artist/academic side) and I really enjoyed what I was able to do with it. Recently I helped one of my professors set up his own blog site for the purpose of answering questions about his particular field and it has … Continue reading

What Type of Teachers Do Middle School Students Like?

In a few of my previous articles I have discussed what parents like about teachers and why some teachers get more requests from parents than others. Recently, I began discussing what it is about teachers that students like. As stated in my article, I discussed how the age of the child typically determines what type of teacher the child enjoys the most. As the child ages and matures, his or her interests and needs change. Their likes and dislikes about teachers also change. My first article described the characteristics of teachers that pre kindergarten and kindergarten students like best along … Continue reading

What Else Makes a Teacher Popular?

Previously, I discussed the option that some parents have to request a teacher for their child. When this option is given at a school, certain teachers typically receive more requests than other teachers. Parents do not always make a request based on research that the teacher chosen is the best. There are several reasons why a teacher may receive many parent requests. The first two reasons I discussed in the first article were parent word of mouth and a good teacher personality. Below I have discussed a few more factors that may make a teacher popular among parents. Academic Teaching … Continue reading

What Makes a Teacher “Popular”?

As discussed in a previous article, this is the time of year when parents begin to think of their child’s teacher for the next school year. Some principals allow parents to request a teacher for their child. Other school administrators leave the decision up to the luck of the draw or random computer choice. Other schools use test scores and behavior records to divide the students into classrooms. No matter which way your child’s school selects homeroom teachers for students, there is likely a certain teacher that you either want or do not want for your child. In each school, … Continue reading

Advantages of Extended School Days

Would you like your children to attend school for eight hours straight, five days a week? It may sound a bit excessive to some parents. However, there are some school districts that have implemented an extended school day. It turns out that there are several benefits to doing so. Extended school days, which are also called extended learning time, have gained popularity within charter schools. Some charter schools may have a bit more freedom about how long their school day runs than some public schools do. That doesn’t mean it would be impossible for an extended school day to be … Continue reading

IXL: Math for the Left and Right Brain

When I find something that I think is an amazing way to teach a child I cannot keep it all to myself. I am bursting at the seams to tell you about a website called IXL. I thought I knew what to expect from IXL Math since I have used several online math programs in the past. What drew me in was the colorful and whimsical design of the site. What else would draw a jaded homeschooling mom into a site she was sure was just like the others? Well, you guessed it, this site is not like the others. … Continue reading

Link Between Family’s Wealth and Teen Drinking

A recent study came out that discussed how teens from wealthier families had a higher tendency to drink alcohol than their peers who come from low income families. Although many like to think that having money would make you and your children healthier, this may not always be the case. At first, I found this study surprising, but upon reflection, I’m guessing it was the same way during my high school days. The big drinkers in my school were defiantly the “popular” kids, most of which were from the wealthier families in my hometown. They were the binge drinkers, getting … Continue reading

Let’s Play! How to Bond with Your New Stepfamily

Not being much of a bowler myself, I was a little surprised when my then-boyfriend suggested that he take my daughter out for a few frames one Saturday afternoon. It was one of the first weekends I had invited him to visit when my daughter wasn’t with her Dad. (After many years of single parenthood, I continued to be very wary of involving her in my romantic liaisons when I wasn’t yet sure where they were headed). This weekend had been discussed between us at length; our relationship had become serious, and we were starting to talk about a future … Continue reading

Celebrities are notorious for choosing unique and unusual names for their children.
