Why Homeschool?

I am a teacher, well, an ex-teacher. My heart will always be that of a teacher, however. That said, so many people ask me if I will be homeschooling my children. I promptly reply, "No way!" I am cut out to educate other people's children, not my own. Don't get me wrong, I have brief moments where keeping my kids out of school and educating them at home seems smarter then sending them to school. Then those thoughts quickly flow out of my head as I realize that I don't want to teach my kids things they are going to have fun learning at school.

I also don't want to take them away from the socialization they will get at school. I will admit that the social aspect was one big reason I wanted them home; they are going to be around other kids who may be using language or discussing things I don't want them to hear. Then I realize that happens to every kid going to school, so I can't protect them from that forever by homeschooling them.

My perspective, from a teacher point of view, is: why homeschool? I mentioned my brief reasons for giving it any thought. My thoughts fleeted when I realized that I really do want my kids to experience school outside the home, school with peers, school where socializing is learned. Why do you choose homeschooling, if you do? Explain it to me. Are the teachers not up to par where you are? Are you worried about school violence? Do you feel the education system is not working where you are?

I am not asking because I feel one choice is better than the other. If you choose to home school your child, go for it. I have no problem with that. What I really want to know is, why? Why was homeschooling the best choice for your family? What is so wrong with the public school system or private schools that they aren't appropriate for your child? Explain it to me; because my view is much different from yours, it's the public school teacher in me!
