Four Alternatives to the Grocery Store

Just fifteen or twenty years ago it would have been unusual to buy your groceries from anywhere other than your typical neighborhood grocery store. Things have definitely changed since then and the average consumer has a whole range of opportunities to shop for food. Gone on are the days when the supermarket was practically the only place most people went to get their groceries. According to the Wall Street Journal, Americans are only shopping for groceries at supermarkets 51 percent of the time. So where are they going for grocery purchases, and will those places save them money? 1. Big … Continue reading

Birthday Cake Part III

Low and behold I did not have enough ice cream. I quickly cleaned out the ice cream freezer barrel (after my son scooped out as much leftover ice cream as possible) so that I could get it back into the freezer. Six hours later I took it out and started freezing the rest of the ice cream base. After forty five minutes the ice cream was not freezing to my utter dismay. I racked my brain for a possible solution. Clearly the barrel was not thoroughly frozen. My first thought was that I would have to wake up at four … Continue reading

Rejuvenating My Post Partum Workout

After the birth of my daughter, I was super excited and ready to get back to my workout routine. I had mentally prepared for the day that I would finally be able to exercise again. I felt like I needed to get started as soon as possible and when my midwife told me that I would most likely be able to resume my workouts at four weeks post partum, I was determined to get started as soon as possible. With lots of anticipation, I started my post partum exercise at exactly four weeks. My motivation level was extremely high because … Continue reading

Taking a Mental Health Day

If you’re like me, you don’t get regularly scheduled days off from work. I can request time off from my editor if I know well in advance of an upcoming vacation or something. But I don’t schedule myself regular time off. For instance, my husband automatically gets four weeks of vacation each year. I also find myself working on a lot of holidays. And while that may be my choice, it is also part of what can happen when you work from home. Many people have this misconception that working from home means excess free time. But I have actually … Continue reading

The Fourth Week Post-Partum

Before I entered my fourth week post-partum, I made preparations for what needed to take place beginning with week four. Even before my daughter was born I was preparing myself for my four week break from exercise. I was determined to begin exercising again as soon as my midwife gave the okay. She said that it would be fine to resume my workout routine within four to six weeks. While my body bounced back much more quickly than with my son, there really is only one way to achieve abdominal muscle tone after pregnancy: regular exercise especially abdominal toning. I … Continue reading

Workers’ Strike Over Health Insurance Could Close Stores

Grocery store workers in Southern California may go on strike this weekend. The strike is a result of a breakdown in negotiations between the union and the stores. If the strike occurs, Ralphs grocery stores will close. Where do you do your grocery shopping? There has been an ongoing issue that involves the health insurance of grocery store workers. This is taking place in the grocery stores located in Southern California. A contract negotiation has lasted eight months, (so far), and has not come to a conclusion. A few weeks ago, the unions that represents 62,000 workers indicated that they … Continue reading

Wisdom From Week Four of the Atkins Diet

I used the fourth week of the Atkins diet as a way to transition between Phase One, Induction, and Phase Two, OWL. I had started changing up the way I had been eating for the past three weeks just a little bit. This, of course, provided a challenge. Originally, my plan was to stay in the Induction Phase until I lost about half of the weight that I intended to lose. After having an unexpected allergic reaction to lettuce in the third week of the Atkins diet, I decided it would be a good idea to move on to the … Continue reading

Our First Social Worker Visit

When a child is placed with you in Foster Care you have to do visits with both your social worker and the state’s social worker. Most of our visits came from our own social worker. She would drive up about every two weeks, to see how they boys were adjusting and if we had any problems or concerns. When our first visit came we were very concerned we really did not know how it was going to go. Steve was still rather shy and we hoped that all would go well. We thought we made good progress so far, we … Continue reading

Reflections at Fourteen Weeks

At fourteen weeks of pregnancy, there’s a lot of different things going through my mind; things that I am expecting to happening and new things I have never experienced before. I have been told by several experienced moms that I will show early with the second pregnancy. At fourteen weeks, my uterus still hasn’t pushed passed my pelvic bone. I am not at all concerned. I know that soon my belly will be expanding at a very fast rate and I am in no hurry. I would rather enjoy this pregnancy day by day and not wish it away (e.g. … Continue reading
